Ghaziabad: To deal with oxygen shortage, the Ghaziabad administration will procure 500 cylinders from Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) in Uttarakhand. They are due to reach the district by Wednesday night, officials said. According to the officials, 100 oxygen cylinders will be used to equip isolation beds while the remaining 400 cylinders will be sent to hospitals across the district. “Against a daily demand of around 42 tonnes of oxygen, we are short by a few tonnes. Since that is proving to be costly for us, we have arranged for 500 cylinders from BHEL,” said an official. “We are planning to equip 400 empty beds with oxygen and the rest will be given to hospitals as per their demands. I must mention that judicious use of oxygen is the need of the hour and everyone should strive for that,” added the official. The district also has 697 ICU/ventilator beds, out of which 692 are occupied and only five are vacant. “In 44 hospitals, we have close to 4,000 beds. Of them, more than 95% are occupied. Given the situation, we plan to acquire around four hospitals, which will enhance our capacity by 100 beds,” said the official. “While all private hospitals have been asked to ensure freeing up of beds occupied by non-serious patients, we on our part will carry out inspections to evict such patients,” added the official. “There is already a direction in force, according to which 10% of beds in all hospitals with over 50 beds need to be reserved for Covid patients,” the official said.
