The 2022 Honda Civic sedan goes on sale in summer 2021 and will be followed by the hatchback, sporty Si, and performance Type R models.

The redesigned 2022 Honda Civic comes with interior improvements and will be offered in sedan or hatchback form, with performance variants of both to follow.

What kind of vehicle is the 2022 Honda Civic? What does it compare to?

The 2022 Honda Civic is a compact car sold in sedan and hatchback body styles. The sedan will be available as a sportier Si model and the hatchback will offer a high-performance Type R. The 11th-generation Civic will not come as a coupe. Other compacts that come as a sedan or hatchback include the Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, and Subaru Impreza.

What's new for the 2022 Honda Civic?

The redesigned 2022 Honda Civic arrives with boxier styling and a new interior that adds quality from the base LX to the top-of-the-line Touring. 

The sedan now dips lower in the front and is more boxed off in the rear, not unlike some luxury sport sedans or four-door muscle cars on a smaller scale. The windshield and A-pillars have been pushed back by about two inches, leaving a long hood that makes the Civic look more stretched than it actually is. It has only grown by 1.4 inches in length, but looks like a mid-size car from a distance. . 

The lower mesh grille stretches wider and taller, and protrudes from under the familiar upper grille. The daytime running lights move from the bottom to the top of the headlight housings. 

Down the side, the low belt line tapers to meet a character line that rises through the rocker panels to meet at the rear wheels. Only the Sport model receives an exhaust tip; on the other trims they are hidden behind the rear bumper. 

A 7.0-inch touchscreen is standard with volume and tuning knobs, but a 9.0-inch touchscreen on Touring models has only a volume knob. Both screens mount high on the dash in a housing that’s the same size, giving each of the Civic’s trim levels a very similar appearance. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, though Apple CarPlay goes wireless with the larger screen. 

Materials on the lower trim levels are impressive, with metal accents on many of the switches and a fingerprint-resistant material on the center console. A clean unbroken mesh panel concealing the vents separates the upper and lower parts. The instrument cluster features a 7.0-inch display and a regular speedometer on LX, Sport, and EX models, while the Touring goes all digital with a 10.2-inch display.

The Civic typically ranks high in our system because of the excellent use of interior space, good standard features for the value, and good crash-test ratings and standard safety features. We’re still waiting on crash-test ratings, but the rest of those points are true about the 11th-generation Civic as well. Honda Sensing with adaptive cruise control, active lane control, and automatic emergency braking is standard across the lineup, adding adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and automatic emergency braking. Touring models also add leather upholstery and a Bose audio system.

The engine options carry over from the 2021 models, with a 158-horsepower 2.0-liter inline-4 featured on LX and Sport trims and a 180-hp 1.5-liter turbo-4 found in the EX and Touring trims. A continuously variable automatic transmission and front-wheel drive complete the drivetrain. Honda has added a new “Sport” driving mode on Sport and Touring models that makes the throttle more responsive. There are also supposed improvements to the chassis to improve ride quality and more feedback in the steering, but we’ll have to confirm that when we get behind the wheel. 

Fuel economy figures have improved slightly for all trim levels. The base LX gets an EPA-estimated 31 mpg city, 40 highway, 35 combined. The Sport drops slightly to 30/37/33 mpg. The EX with the turbo-4 is the most fuel efficient of the bunch at 33/42/36 mpg. The Touring comes in at 31/38/34 mpg.
