SHILLONG, April 28: The Meghalaya government on Wednesday declared 10-day containment of the state capital, Jowai and Tura towns from May 1 to 10, to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The decision was taken after a review meeting chaired by the chief minister Conrad K Sangma following surge in the number of the cases in the last few days.

Addressing media persons, deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong said, “The state government has decided to bring Shillong urban agglomeration, Jowai and Tura under containment for 10 days with effect from May 1 to May 10.”

“Containment is just like lockdown. We have to take the step now to stop the spread of the virus by any means,” Tynsong said.

“The government has taken these decisions after thorough discussion and getting inputs from different district administration authorities. Effective 5 am on May 1 to 5 am on May 10, containment measures, not lockdown, will be enforced in places that have seen a spike in Covid-19 cases, namely Shillong (urban agglomeration), Jowai and Tura,” the deputy chief minister said.

Tynsong said during the containment period, all public, political, social and religious gathering are not allowed except weddings and funerals are permitted subject to adherence to protocols.

All public, political, social and religious gathering are not allowed, including meeting religious services, except wedding and funeral regulated by respective DCs.

All sporting activities are not allowed.

All education institutions shall remain shut from 1-10 may 2021.

All private offices will be shut except those essential services. The non-essential Central government offices also will not be allowed to open but they may work from home.
