Dubai: Former Sri Lankan seam bowler and coach Nuwan Zoysa has been banned from all cricket for six years on Wednesday after being found guilty of trying to correct matches and failing to disclose the corrupt approaches of a suspected Indian booklet.
The ban on Zoysa, a left-handed seam bowler, is dated back to 31 October 2018, when he was provisionally suspended.
“In his role as national coach, he should have acted as a role model. Instead, he became involved with a corrupt man and tried to corrupt others, ‘said Alex Marshall, ICC General Manager – Integrity Unit in a release.
‘Fixing a match betrays the basis of sports principles. This will not be tolerated in our sport. ”
The 42-year-old man, who has played 30 Tests and 95 ODIs for Sri Lanka, was originally charged in 2018 following his career as team coach of Sri Sri Lanka in a T10 tournament held in the UAE in 2017.
In its full ruling, the ICC said Zoysa was introduced to the Indian suspect in Colombo in 2017 during his time as Sri Lanka A’s bowling coach.
After some interactions, the former bowler became aware that the man, who appeared in ICC documents as Mr. W is called, ‘was involved in drafting matches or aspects of matches’ and wanted Zoysa on board because he ‘as a coach knew players and could get them to correct matches’.
“At the request of (Mr W), Zoysa approached in late 2017 (Player A) and asked him if, in connection with Sri Lanka’s upcoming series against Bangladesh and / or Zimbabwe, he would be prepared to go 12-15 away. give. running in a over during bowling, or getting out deliberately during batting, “reads the ICC ruling.
‘Mr. Zoysa told player (A) that he can get good money if he underperforms in this way. (Player A) immediately refused that approach and for Mr. “Zoysa said he would not agree to do that,” he added.
After full hearings and arguments, the Tribunal found Zoysa guilty of violating articles related to the attempt to correct matches, enticing others to violate the Code of Conduct and failing to report the approaches by corrupt individuals.
Zoysa has also been indicted by the ICC on behalf of the Emirates Cricket Board for violating three charges of their ECB anti-corruption code for the T10 league, and these proceedings continue.
He has worked as a bowling coach for Sri Lanka A team in the past.
Zoysa is the latest in a long line of Sri Lankan cricketers banned by the ICC for corruption.
Earlier this month, former pacemaker Dilhara Lokuhettige was banned from all cricket for eight years after being found guilty of violating the ICC anti-corruption code.
