I went to a shooting range for the first time back in September. Shooting a gun (honestly can't remember what pistol it was/I'm not a gun guy by any stretch), was literally one of the hardest things I've ever done. The recoil from just a pistol was nuts. And I'm not a small guy either. It's a shame reading stories of people being shot and killed, but dam I hate when people expect cops to be crackshots who can pick what body part to shoot from yards away.

Shooting a pistol to hit a small target, even in a controlled environment where you can take your time, is not easy. It takes me 2-3 shots just to get a feeling for my target. The only reason to discharge your weapon as a cop is if your life or someone else's life is in danger.
Shooting someone in the leg isn't going to stop them from shooting you back.
Most people are delusional and really have no idea how brutal the world is. Everyone has the capacity to kill for the right reason and some people kill, assault, steal, rape without a real reason. You're a fool if you aren't capable of defending yourself with a gun or otherwise.
