Karnataka allows garment units to operate at half their strength

The State Government on Wednesday allowed garment units to operate at half their capacity responding to demands from the sector which employs about eight lakh workers in Bengaluru.

The April 26 notification had allowed the manufacturing, construction and agriculture sector to operate during the 14-day lockdown which took effect on Tuesday night.

Garment units had told the government that they have strict export commitments to European markets, defaults of which would result in penalties. And, if they failed to meet delivery schedules to foreign buyers, they might divert orders to countries like Bangladesh and may deny them future orders as well.

Since most garment units are on the outskirts of it is unclear how workers will travel as most of them are women and regular users of public transport.

“We will try to manage with people who live in the vicinity of our factories and have private transport,” said Sivaramakrishnan Ganapathi, managing director at , which operates 15 units in Karnataka.
