India on Wednesday recorded a global high of 3,60,960 new cases in the last 24 hours, pushing the total caseload to over 1.79 crores. With the fresh deaths of 3,293 deaths, the country’s total fatalities have crossed the 2-lakh mark with 2,01,187 total deaths.
This is the seventh-straight-day that India has logged over three lakh cases in a single day. The country is the second worst-hit country after the US. The second wave of the infection has crippled the healthcare system with shortage of oxygen and medicines.
Many nations like Saudi Arabia, US, Pakistan have offered their assistance in the supply of medical facilities and life-saving gas cylinders to India in view of the unprecedented surge of infections over the past few weeks.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had chaired the meeting with senior officials to review the Covid situation. He has directed them to ensure rapid upgrading of health infrastructure.
Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi are among the most affected states in the country which have been recording the most number of Covid-19 infections and related deaths in the past few weeks.
Maharashtra has the highest Covid tally with record-rise of 66,000 new cases and 895 new Covid-linked deaths in the last 24 hours. Kerala has logged over 30,000 new infections for the first time on Tuesday, increasing the active caseload by 255 per cent in the last two weeks.
In Delhi, the city which is grappling with shortage of bed, oxygen and medicines, 381 people died over the last 24 hours. With fresh infection of 24,149, the active cases have mounted to over 98,000.

Meanwhile, the registration for the next phase of the vaccination drive for citizens above 18 years of age scheduled to begin on May 1, will start from Wednesday evening from 4 pm. Those eligible can book their slots online via the government’s Co-Win portal or the Aarogya Setu app.
