But right before we got into, I covered my bases and said 'this isn't critical race theory is it?'
He assured me it was not. So I spilled my opener - that I've been conditioned, like most millennials, and I don't believe I participate in the perpetuation of racism in America. I won't make the personal argument here, it's irrelevant, it seems, because his response was:
And then I was lost, because this is CRT isn't it??Everyone has a little product of their environment in them, and if the society is racist then some part of everyone is racist as long as they tolerate the society they live in.
Can someone help me finish this discussion? I was excited to have it, and I felt like we immediately lost sight of the topic.
Is it not racist to assume character attributes about a person because of their skin?
I don't deny that racism exists, and I believe I wouldn't tolerate real racism if I encountered it.
I just don't like these blanket arguments that the whole of society is racist.

He is correct but what can you do about it? Take Mitch McConnell. His family fortune which he still holds today was built off the backs of slaves. This is true for many millionaires in the world. Rich people have prospered off immigrants and their cheap labor for centuries also. But the question is what to do about that today? Do the descendants owe anything to the descendants of those used and abused? Now we're getting into moral values. There have been many documented cases of minorities only being allowed to purchase home or rent apartments in certain parts of town. They start at a disadvantage. While that has improved, it still leaves them behind. What do we do about that?
Imo, the argument is the same as what millennials say about boomers. Boomers had it easy and left the next generations holding the bag. I saw the phrase "you broke our legs then expected us to run". Same concept as racism. There's just no easy answer.

I am not trolling.
What I've quoted? So what my buddy said.. is a perpetual license to be nasty?
I mean.. I don't think I quite understand it that way, but I won't disagree, since I really don't like it. I suppose I need to do some thinking to find the words why. But describing everyone who exists in the system as part of the problem, seems like a terrible way to address the issue.
lol plz no
This is an excellent point. I can totally see where you're coming from.
I'll have to stew on this a bit before I can articulate a response though.Last edited by Glutebrahhh; Today at 08:50 AM.

Unless you're black, then I've got bad news for you.
Have you been tested for unconscious racial bias? Just because you don't act like a racist doesn't mean you don't have racist thoughts that you aren't even aware of. I know it sound like ghost hunting, but it's taken VERY seriously by academia.
