Police: Fallout over a woman led to DraftKings shooting

Apr. 27—A near-fatal shooting last week outside DraftKings Sportsbook in Manchester involved two friends who had a falling out over a woman, according to police reports filed in connection with the case.

The report was filed Tuesday, the day after police arrested Dorchester, Mass., resident Antwone Cousins, 39, on charges of first-degree assault and felon in possession of a dangerous weapon.

A police affidavit filed in Hillsborough County Superior Court said Cousins shot Marquis Anderson, 38, in the lower right abdomen and lower left leg at the DraftKings parking lot off South Willow Street on the night of April 19.

Anderson was initially treated at Elliot Hospital and listed in critical condition but was later flown by helicopter to another, unnamed hospital, according to the affidavit.

Police on Tuesday did not immediately return an email seeking an update on Anderson's medical condition.

According to the affidavit, video surveillance cameras captured the shooting in the parking lot of DraftKings. Police also interviewed witnesses and others familiar with the two.

"Antwone and Marquis used to be close friends, but they have had a recent falling out over another female with whom they have both been in a relationship with," the affidavit reads, quoting a witness.

That witness also told police that Anderson said something confrontational to Cousins as he walked through the parking lot. Shortly afterward, the witness heard gunshots.

A bail commissioner ordered Cousins held in preventive detention until at least Thursday, when he is scheduled to appear in Hillsborough County Superior Court for a preventive detention hearing.

Superior Court Judge Amy Messer approved Cousins' request for a public defender, but as of Tuesday afternoon no specific lawyer had been assigned to the case.

The shooting is the second crime in two months involving a gun at DraftKings, which is located at 1279 South Willow St. The address includes the Filotimo Casino and Restaurant, a bingo hall, a room for poker and table games and the South Side Tavern.

Shortly after the shooting, Sportsbook owner Dick Anagnost said he was going to beef up security and announced a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the incident.

According to the affidavit, Crimeline received a tip on April 20 that Cousins shot Anderson. The two had been involved in an altercation earlier in April, according to the tip.

    Former President Donald Trump is once again mad about the Oscars — and not just for the reasons you might think. On Tuesday, Trump released a statement complaining about Sunday's Academy Awards, and he seemed surprisingly hung up on the show being referred to as the Oscars. "What used to be called The Academy Awards" now is "called the 'Oscars' — a far less important and elegant name," he wrote. While producers in 2013 re-branded the awards ceremony as just the Oscars in advertising, the two terms are still used interchangeably, and the Academy's official website referenced this year's show as the "93rd Academy Awards." The ceremony is also often called the Academy Awards during the telecast, and the "Oscar" nickname itself dates back to the 1930s. Trump, who has long offered his negative reviews of the Oscars including while in office, also gleefully pointed out the show's ratings plummeted to an all-time low this year while demanding the Academy "go back 15 years, look at the formula they then used, change the name back to THE ACADEMY AWARDS, don't be so politically correct and boring, and do it right." Fifteen years ago would be the 2006 Oscars, so perhaps he's just a big fan of Crash. Either way, after an Oscars that did draw heavy criticism all around for its disastrous ending, one of Trump's top complaints apparently being the actual name of the ceremony was certainly an unexpected take. Still, he certainly wasn't the first person to slam this year's show as being a bit "boring," and he offered at least one reasonably popular take: "ALSO, BRING BACK A GREAT HOST." Trump, though, may have a particular person in mind. "The Academy Awards last night were absolutely terrible — boring, ugly sets, everything," Trump said back in 2015. "I have the perfect host for next year: me." And there's a wide middle, too.Other activities that don't need the same rigorous standards as international travel could rely on the CDC's vaccination cards; options like a printed QR code, similar to what's been proposed by PathCheck; or a digital QR code, like the ones created by CommonPass or the Vaccine Credential Initiative.There may be some state-issued credentials, like the Excelsior Pass in New York.A national credential is theoretically possible, and could be linked to the biometric information that already exists on many chipped passports — the World Health Organization is working with Estonia to develop something along those lines — but that would meet steep political resistance in the U.S.The bottom line: The world of vaccine passports is almost certainly going to end up as a mishmash of different credentials for different activities, rather than a single credential used by everybody for everything.
