A Walter Sisulu University (WSU) student has appeared in court for allegedly attacking police officers during a protest.
Mfuneko Mankengana, 24, appeared in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court to face charges of damage to essential infrastructure, public violence, malicious injury to property and two counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
Students hurled stones at the police along the N2 road during the protest, near the university's Nelson Mandela Drive campus in Mthatha. Four police officers were wounded during the violence.
The violent protest followed a string of student demands, including the waiving of student debt and the provision of funding and accommodation, News24 previously reported.
"The student is alleged to have been part of a group of student protesters who attacked members of the SAPS and burnt an armoured police vehicle... with two police officers inside," said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Luxolo Tyali.
He was arrested on 20 April.
Mankengana was released on R1 000 bail after his appearance on Wednesday.
"The State decided not to oppose bail after the investigating officer verified his address and criminal profile," said Tyali.
The case was postponed to 2 June 2021 for further investigations.
