Action under NSA for spreading rumours on oxygen shortage, says Yogi Adityanath

According to reports, several SOS requests for oxygen cylinders and other support for COVID-19 inundate social media, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister insisted that there was no shortage of oxygen at any private or public COVID-19 hospital in the state.

While speaking to editors of different newspapers through a virtual conference, he stated that he had directed officials to take action under the National Security Act and the Gangsters Act against “anti-social elements” involved in “black-marketeering” of medicines, reports The Hindu

He has also asked them to "seize the property" of those spreading rumours and trying to "spoil the atmosphere".

Assam logs 3,132 new COVID-19 cases, 18 more deaths

Assam's COVID-19 tally surged to 2,43,802 as 3,132 more people tested positive for the infection on Tuesday while 18 new fatalities pushed the coronavirus death toll to 1,233, according to the bulletin issued by the state National Health Mission.

The 18 new fatalities were reported from Kamrup Metropolitan district (5), two each from Cachar, Goalpara, Nalbari and one each from Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Hojai, Jorhat, Kamrup Rural, Karimganj and Sivasagar districts, it said.

Of the new COVID-19 cases, Kamrup Metropolitan reported the highest number of cases at 1,313 followed by Dibrugarh (228), Kamrup Rural (197) and Jorhat (127). Assam currently has 19,923 active COVID-19 cases, the bulletin said.

Record 381 COVID-19 deaths in Delhi; positivity rate over 32%

Delhi logged a record 381 COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday, while the positivity rate stood at 32.72 percent, according to the latest bulletin issued by the city health department. This is the sixth day on the trot that Delhi has recorded over 300 deaths due to coronavirus.

It had reported 380 deaths on Monday, 350 on Sunday, 357 deaths on Saturday, 348 on Friday and 306 on Thursday, according to government data.

The national capital had recorded 20,201 cases on Monday, 22,933 on Sunday, 24,103 on Saturday, 24,331 on Friday, 26,169 on Thursday, and 24,638 on Wednesday.

The positivity rate was 35.02 per cent on Monday, 30.21 on Sunday, 32.27 per cent on Saturday, 32.43 on Friday, 36.24 on Thursday -- the highest so far -- 31.28 on Wednesday and 32.82 on Tuesday.

Nagaland to impose partial lockdown for a fortnight from 30 April

Nagaland cabinet Tuesday decided to impose partial lockdown with stricter rules in the state from April 30 to May 14 in view of the surge in COVID-19 cases across the country, a government official said.

The cabinet also decided to impose a fine of Rs 200 on those not wearing a mask in public places, he said. The Neiphiu Rio government in the state decided to provide free vaccines to everyone above 18 years of age, he said.

"Fresh guidelines for the lockdown will be issued on April 29," the advisor for IT, science and technology, Mmhonlumo Kikon said. During the partial lockdown schools, colleges, educational institutions and hostels will remain closed in the state. Online education will be permitted and encouraged, he said.

CDC says many Americans can now go outside without a mask

US health officials say fully vaccinated Americans don't need to wear masks outdoors anymore unless they are in a big crowd of strangers, and those who are unvaccinated can go without a face covering outside in some cases, too, reports The Associated Press

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the updated guidance on Tuesday in yet another carefully calibrated step on the road back to normal from the coronavirus outbreak that has killed over 570,000 people in the US.

For most of the past year, the CDC had been advising Americans to wear masks outdoors if they are within 6 feet of each other.

The change comes as more than half of US adults have gotten at least one dose of coronavirus vaccine, and more than a third have been fully vaccinated.

Maharashtra reports 66,358 new COVID-19 cases, 895 deaths

Maharashtra on Tuesday reported 66,358 fresh coronavirus positive cases and 895 fatalities, taking the tally of infections to 44,10,085 and the toll to 66,179, the state health department said. Mumbai recorded 3,999 new cases and 59 deaths, raising the overall tally to 6,35,483 and the toll to 12,920.

A total of 67,752 patients were discharged from hospitals in Maharashtra during the day, taking the number of recoveries to 36,69,548, a health official said.

Of the 895 fatalities, 392 occurred in the last 48 hours and 179 in the last week. While the rest 324 deaths had occurred in the period before the last week, these figures were added to the toll now, the official explained. Maharashtra is now left with 6,72,434 active cases, the official said.

Manipur BJP President tests COVID-19 positive

BJP Manipur unit president Prof S Tikendra Singh said on Tuesday that he has tested positive for COVID-19. Singh told PTI over the phone that he has quarantined himself at his home at Nambol in Bishnupur district after he tested positive for COVID-19.

He said that his health condition is normal. The state BJP president requested all persons who came in contact with him in the last few days to take COVID-19 test.

Medical oxygen production being ramped up: Officials inform PM

The production of liquid medical oxygen (LMO) has risen to 8,922 MT per day and is expected to cross 9,250 MT by the end of the month, the government said on Tuesday, noting that it was only 5,700 MT in August last year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was informed about the increasing production of the life-saving gas, whose shortage has been reported in several places amid a surge in COVID-19 cases, at a high-level meeting on Tuesday during which he asked officials to work closely with state governments to start PSA Oxygen plants at the earliest.

In the meeting on the prevailing COVID-19 situation, Modi reviewed the availability of medical infrastructure and directed officials to ensure rapid up-gradation of health facilities, the PMO said in a statement. Three empowered groups also made a presentation to the prime minister, it added.

With over 32,000 cases, Kerala sees 255% increase in active cases

Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday said the state has witnessed a 255 percent increase in active cases in the last two weeks even as the southern state reported 32,819 cases, the highest ever single-day surge.

Vijayan, who met the media after the COVID-19 evaluation meet, said the government has decided to strictly implement the restrictions considering the grim situation in the state due to the rising numbers.

He also said the information about the presence of genetically modified viruses in the state is being taken seriously.

"The numbers of Covid-infected people and the rate of the disease spread continues unabated. There is the presence of the genetically mutant virus (double mutant variant) on a large scale. There has been a 255 percent increase in the active cases in Kerala in the last two weeks. The situation across the state is grim," Vijayan said.

He said considering the rising numbers, the screening will be augmented at railway stations, airports, and in places where there is a large number of guest workers.

Haryana records 11,931 COVID-19 cases, 84 deaths

Haryana recorded its biggest single-day jump in coronavirus deaths as 84 people succumbed to the disease on Tuesday, even as 11,931 fresh cases pushed the state's infection count to 4,47,754.

So far, the infection has claimed 3,926 lives in the state. According to a Health Department bulletin, 10 each died in Gurgaon and Hisar, nine in Ambala, eight each in Rohtak and Jind, seven in Fatehabad and six in Bhiwani district.

Among the districts that reported a big spike in cases are Gurgaon (3,684), Faridabad (1,330), Sonipat (940), Karnal (725), Hisar (642), Sirsa (621), Panipat (564) and Jind (561).

The number of active COVID-19 cases in the state was 84,129. So far, 3,59,699 people have recovered and the state has a recovery rate of 80.33 percent, the bulletin said.

Delhi will have 1,200 ICU beds by 10 May: Kejriwal

Terming the current wave of COVID-19 as dangerous and contagious, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said that the National Capital will have additional 1,200 ICU beds by 10 May. He said that a 500 ICU bed-facility will come up at Ramlila Maidan — one of the biggest grounds in the national capital -- while another facility having similar capacity will be set up near the city's GTB Hospital.

Earlier in the day, the chief minister visited both the sites to take stock of preparations with Health Minister Satyendar Jain and senior officers. He said 200 ICU beds are also being readied at Radha Soami Satsang Beas in Delhi's Chhatarpur area.

The Madhya Pradesh government on Tuesday decided to grant emergency leave of 60 days to certain inmates to manage prison numbers in view of a surge in cases in the state, an official said.

The Central Government, with active and constant supervision and direct involvement of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, is augmenting the oxygen supply on a war footing evolving and implementing innovative measures, the Centre told SC in an affidavit.

"It is clear to us that the Delhi government has to pull up its socks with respect to distribution of not only liquid oxygen but also oxygen cylinders," reports quoted the Delhi High Court as saying.

The court also salmmed the state government, saying there was hoarding of both oxygen and medicines and the state govt was doing nothing.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar earlier during the day said there is no point in debating the number of Covid deaths at the moment and the focus should be on ensuring that more affected people recover from the disease.

The Assam government on Tuesday imposed night curfew across the state from 8 pm to 5 am with immediate effect. The state disaster management authority, in its order, said the curfew will be in place till 1 May.

During a hearing on the suo moto proceedings on the surge in COVIDD-19 cases in Gujarat, the High Court raps the state government, says the affidavit submitted by it paints a rosy picture and is not in touch with the ground reality. "We can't sit on the ivory towers. The state has to take steps to break the chain," says Justice Karia.

Authorities in Western Australia said that four returning passengers, who were quarantined in a hotel at Perth, tested positive following their return from India.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the decision taken by the Tamil Nadu government to allow re-opening of Vedanta-owned Sterlite copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi, for four months for oxygen production.

The bench said that the order was passed only in view of the national need for oxygen. 'The order will not create any equities in favour of Vendanta,' observed the top court.

Total vaccination across the country has crossed over 14.5 crore with more than 31 lakh doses of vaccine administered till 8 pm on Monday, the health ministry said.

The cumulative number of vaccine doses administered in the country stands at 14,50,85,911 according to the 8 pm provisional report, the ministry said.

These include 93,23,439 healthcare workers (HCWs) who have taken the first dose and 60,59,065 HCWs who have taken the second dose. As many as 1,21,00,254 frontline workers (FLWs) have received the first dose and64,11,024 FLWs have taken the second dose.

Besides, 4,92,77,949 and 26,78,151 beneficiaries between 45 to 60 years have taken the first and second dose respectively, while, 5,05,37,922 and 86,98,107 aged above 60 have taken the first and second dose respectively.

A total of 31,74,688 vaccine doses were given till 8 pm on Monday, the 101st day of nationwide vaccination.

Out of these, 19,73,778 beneficiaries were vaccinated for the first time and 12,00,910 beneficiaries received the second dose as per the provisional report, the ministry said, adding final reports would be completed for the day by late night.

vaccination for those over 60 years and for people aged 45 and above with specified co-morbid conditions commenced from 1 March .

India launched vaccination for all people aged more than 45 from 1 April.

The government has also decided to expand its vaccination drive by allowing everyone above 18 eligible to be vaccinated from 1 May.
