1 lakh fighting infection in Tamil Nadu, active cases dip slightly in Chennai

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu added 94 deaths and 15,684 new cases to the state Covid registry on Monday, leaving 1,07,145 active infections. While the case tally touched 10.97 lakh and cumulative toll reached 13,651, the state said 9.76 lakh people have recovered from the disease so far.
At least 33 districts in the state reported more than 100 new cases, just as the state tested 1.15 lakh people until Monday afternoon. With 4,250 new cases and 35 deaths, hotspot Chennai continued to report the maximum number of cases and deaths in the state. By the end of the day, active cases in the city were 31,142 compared to 31,535 on Sunday. Though the city has been adding more cases, daily recoveries have been more than fresh cases for the past two days causing the dip in active infections, health officials said.
After Chennai, Chengalpet reported 1,142 new cases and four deaths. With 838 new cases in Tiruvallur and 432 more in Kancheepuram, the Chennai region reported 6,662 new cases and 52 deaths. The remaining districts in the north reported 1,606 cases and nine deaths. In the west, with 1,056 new cases, Coimbatore reported the maximum. Together, the eight western districts reported 3,341 new cases and ten deaths. The ten southern districts had a tally of 2,821 new cases, while the districts in the central zone reported 1,254 new cases. Perambalur had the least cases (24).
Meanwhile, the director of medical service, has asked all labs, scan centres and hospitals to report CT positive cases to state government or face action under the Clinical Establishment Act. “We found that many people skipped taking RTPCR test after CT showed signs of Covid-19. We want to ensure such people are tested and treated,” said director of medical services Dr S Gurunathan.
Meanwhile TN vaccinated 1,59,272 people taking the total number of doses TN had administered so far to 54,21,645.
