Chhattisgarh: Maoists torch trucks, beat up drivers on ‘Bharat bandh’

RAIPUR: Maoists marked ‘Bharat bandh’ in Bastar on Monday by torching seven vehicles on a national highway in Sukma, beating up the drivers and stringing up a banner 500m from a CRPF camp in Dantewada. The banner, tied brazenly to a CRPF hoarding, urges villagers to protest the “undeclared war” by the government and deployment of paramilitary forces in Bastar. Maoists scattered leaflets and hung banners on Barsoor-Palli, barely half a kilometre from the CRPF 195 Battalion camp.

On Sunday night, Maoists torched seven trucks, one by one, on NH30 between Darbhaguda and Lendra in Sukma. The truck drivers told police that an armed group intercepted them, forced them off the vehicles and beat them up for “daring to be on the road during Bharat bandh”. After the Maoists left, the truckers walked a kilometre to Errabore police station and reported the incident.

Maoists have gone on the offensive with the onset of summer and the TCOC (tactical counter offensive campaign) during which they carry out relentless attacks on security personnel, kill villagers after accusing them of working for police, and block roads and railway tracks.

Only two days ago, Maoists sabotaged railway tracks to derail a passenger train in Dantewada. Thankfully, the alert loco driver braked hard and saved everyone’s life. On April 23, Maoists had killed SI Murli Tati after keeping him hostage for four days in Bijapur. A BSF camp in Kanker came under fire on April 24 but the Maoists retreated into the forest after firing a few shots.
