It means that the exponential rate of growth of the second wave has infected more people than the total in 13 months since the outbreak of the pandemic in March 2020. The deaths in April so far have been 466, one fourth of the overall toll.

However, 6,035 patients — more than the new infections — recovered from the disease. It was for the fifth consecutive day that recoveries were more than the cases. Also, for the first time after 13 days, the daily tally dropped below 5,000, leading to decline in patients with active infections to 50,627 from Sunday’s 52,000.
However, number of hospitalisations of critical and serious cases continued to be increase. Nearly, 4,700 were in the 72 Covid hospitals. Of these, 1,145 were in ICUs and 1,909 in high dependency units with oxygen support. “We should not be complacent with a slight decline in cases on Monday and continue to strictly adhere to safety protocols,” said a senior KGMU professor.
