Delhi is one of the States facing an acute shortage of oxygen as the Covid-19 rages in India.

The oxygen demand for Delhi and the National Capital region is likely to be met from Angul, Kalingnagar, and Rourkela, besides Raigarh, Railway board chairman Suneet Sharma told reporters on Sunday.

Initially, state governments of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra had approached the railway ministry to explore whether liquid medical oxygen (LMO) tankers could be moved by the Railways due to increased demand following the spread of the Covid-19 outbreak.

To ensure that parameters of transportation are tested, trials were conducted at various locations. Route clearances were taken, and it was found that it would be possible to undertake movements as RORO consignment with speed restrictions on some sections depending on overhead clearances.

To enable commercial booking and freight payment for RORO movement of LMO in cryogenic tankers, the Ministry of Railways issued a circular on April 16, providing necessary details and guidance on the matter.

As per provisional estimates Indian Railways has delivered 202 metric tonnes to Uttar Pradesh, 174 metric tonnes to Maharashtra and 70 metric tonnes to Delhi. Madhya Pradesh will receive 64 metric tonnes in next 24 hours, the railway ministry said in a statement.

As of Tuesday evening, another oxygen express was on the run from Bokaro to Bhopal via Jabalpur. This train is carrying 64 metric tonnes of liquid medical oxygen in six tankers, which will replenish oxygen demand in the cities of Bhopal and Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh.

Another empty rake from Lucknow has reached Bokaro, which will bring another set of oxygen tankers to be supplied to Uttar Pradesh.
