The Newsom Recall Effort Qualifies for a Fall Election

The effort to recall California governor Gavin Newsom has gained enough signatures to be placed on the ballot in November, according to the California secretary of state’s office.

An update from the secretary of state on Monday noted that recall petitioners have gathered and submitted 1,626,042 signatures in support of a recall vote. Petitioners needed to reach at least 1,495,000 signatures in order to qualify to place the recall on the ballot.

Counties have until April 29 to submit signatures for verification, which will be followed by a 30-day period during which petitioners may withdraw their signatures from the effort. However, Governor Newsom’s team believes that it is highly unlikely they will be able to prevent a recall from moving forward, according to ABC’s affiliate in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The recall petition gathered steam amid frustration over Newsom’s coronavirus policies, which have included some of the strictest lockdown measures in the U.S.

“I feel that the recall effort has become less of a partisan issue — say Republican, Democrat, etc. — and it’s been an educational issue,” Clarissa Falen, a parent of two high-school-age students northeast of Sacramento, told National Review in February. Many California school districts have remained closed to in-person learning for months at a time, and San Francisco schools allowed students back in the classroom in mid April for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

Former San Diego mayor Kevin Falconer has entered the race to oust Newsom. Additionally, on Monday, reality-TV star Caitlyn Jenner announced plans to run for governor.

    Fox NewsFox News on Monday afternoon issued a brief correction after spending several days pushing the blatant falsehood that President Joe Biden’s climate plan calls for limits to American red meat consumption.“On Friday, we told you about a study from the University of Michigan to give some perspective on President Biden’s ambitious climate change goals,” Fox News anchor John Roberts said on Monday’s broadcast of America Reports. “That research, from 2020, found that cutting back how much red meat people eat would have a drastic impact on harmful greenhouse gas emissions.”He continued: “The data was accurate but a graphic and the script incorrectly implied that it was part of Biden’s plan for dealing with climate change. As CNN’s resident fact-checker Daniel Dale noted on Monday morning: “Biden has not proposed any limit on Americans’ red meat consumption. In fact, he has not proposed any limit on Americans' consumption of any food.”During Friday’s broadcast of America’s Newsroom, however, that didn’t stop Roberts from warning viewers they will need to “say goodbye to your burgers if you want to sign up to the Biden climate agenda.” With an on-air graphic blaring “Bye-Bye Burgers Under Biden’s Climate Plan,” Roberts also made a “Where’s the Beef?” joke while discussing the Biden administration’s red meat restrictions that don’t actually exist.Roberts’ segment with former Trump aide Larry Kudlow—who, on his own FBN show, would bemoan that Americans will be forced to grill Brussels spouts—helped kick off a multi-day outrage cycle on the network, inevitably fueling a false narrative among right-wing media about Biden’s policies.“Joe Biden’s climate plan includes cutting 90% of red meat from our diets by 2030,” conspiracy peddling Rep. The news comes as coronavirus spread continues to ravage large nations including India and Brazil. “Given the strong portfolio of vaccines that the U.S. already has and that have been authorized by the FDA, and given that the AstraZeneca vaccine is not authorized for use in the U.S., we do not need to use the AstraZeneca vaccine here during the next several months,” Zients said. “Therefore the U.S. is looking at options to share the AstraZeneca doses with other countries as they become available.” The White House is confident that the U.S. supply of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccines is enough to vaccinate all Americans. The Biden administration has already exported 4 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines to Canada and Mexico. AstraZeneca doses are currently in use in dozens of world countries, and was central to the U.K.’s vaccination program that is credited with driving down coronavirus spread in that country. Other European nations briefly halted distribution of the vaccine to investigate a blood clotting issue that may be a rare side effect of the vaccine. As of April 4, European regulators said that around 222 recipients in the European Union and the U.K. had developed the clot out of over 34 million people who received the vaccine in total.
