COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore city police on Monday arrested two men for killing a stray dog at Rangavilas Nagar in Peelamedu. The duo were remanded in judicial custody and lodged in Pollachi sub-jail.
Pradeep Prabhakaran, 32, an honorary district animal welfare officer with the Animal Welfare Board of India, lodged a complaint with the Peelamedu police on Sunday night. In his complaint, Prabhakaran stated that he received information from a person that R Balasundaram, 65, of Ellaithottam Road and Mithun, 22, a guest worker from Odisha, killed a homeless dog on Sunday evening by beating it repeatedly with a log after tying it to a tree.
Based on his complaint, the Peelamedu police registered a case against the duo under Section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle etc) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 11 (1) (i) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
The carcass of the dog was found on the roadside on Monday morning. A veterinary doctor carried out a postmortem. Later, it was buried.
Prabhakaran told TOI that the homeless dog was a very active one. But Balasundaram did not like it. He approached some youths in the area to kill the dog. However, the youths told him to approach the city municipal corporation which would capture the dog. But with the help of the guest worker, Balasundaram killed the dog.
When the youths questioned him for killing the dog, Balasundaram contacted the city police control room alleging that he had been harassed by them.
