Donald Trump Jr. 'Assumes' Lincoln Project Planning for Liz Cheney to Run as Democrat in 2024

Donald Trump Jr., former President Donald Trump's eldest son, on Monday said he assumes the Lincoln Project has recruited Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney to challenge President Joe Biden for the 2024 Democratic nomination after the moderate Republican said she's not ruling out a presidential run.

On Monday, the New York Post reported that Cheney declined to rule out a potential presidential run. "I'm not ruling anything in or out—ever is a long time," she said. "I think we have a huge number of interesting candidates, but I think that we're going to be in a good position to be able to take the White House."

Cheney, the No. 3 House Republican, has frequently been targeted by Trump and his allies after she sided with Democrats in voting to impeach the ex-president for a second time for his alleged role in inciting the January 6 Capitol riot.

Trump Jr. suggested that she would be running as a Democrat while insisting that she would find it hard to draw 5 percent in the 2024 Republican primary.

"I can only assume this means that Lincoln Project Liz is planning a primary challenge to Joe Biden for the Dem nomination because God knows she'd be lucky to break 5% running in the 2024 Republican primary," he tweeted.

Trump Jr., Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz and other Trump loyalists have actively campaigned to unseat Cheney following her vote to impeach.

In early February, the Wyoming Republican Party voted to censure Cheney and ask her to resign from the party.

Cheney defended her vote in an interview on Fox News Sunday. "I think that the people in the party are mistaken. They believe that [Black Lives Matter] and Antifa were behind what happened here at the Capitol. That's just simply not the case, it's not true," she said.

"People have been lied to. The extent to which President Trump, for months leading up to Jan. 6, spread the notion that the election had been stolen or that the election was rigged was a lie, and people need to understand that," she added.

In her recent interview with the Post, Cheney dismissed GOP efforts to oust her from the party.

"My primary is clearly going to be an important one—I am more than happy anytime and any place to debate anybody who wants to about what happened on Jan. 6 and why our oath of office requires that we make sure that that never happens again," she said. " And I feel confident about prevailing in my primary."
