Next-gen HR-V has big job to do for Honda

    The HR-V, called the Vezel in Japan, will play a key role in electrifying the brand.

    TOKYO — Honda will roll out two versions of the next-generation HR-V subcompact crossover: one developed for the U.S. and another for the rest of the world.

    Honda wants the revamp to play a big role in electrifying the brand. In Japan, where it went on sale last week, and in Europe, the redesigned HR-V has a standard hybrid powertrain that features Honda Motor Co.'s new two-motor e:HEV technology.

    In China, a full-electric cousin may be in the cards. At last week's Shanghai auto show, Honda showed the SUV e:Prototype, which previews a crossover with the same design. The vehicle goes on sale in the spring of 2022 as Honda's first EV in China.

    The updated global HR-V, called the Vezel in Japan, is substantially restyled, with clean bodywork and a well-proportioned stance. It has an understated side crease running straight along the flank, in bold contrast to the dramatically curved cut lines of the current generation.

    But a lingering question is how all this will translate into the next-generation HR-V for the U.S.

    The current HR-V, which debuted in 2013, was pitched as a global nameplate that would have the same basic styling and engineering worldwide. In fact, it is sold in 120 countries and regions. In the U.S., it was the No. 3 seller among subcompact crossovers and Honda's third bestselling light truck in 2020.

    But the next-gen HR-V for the U.S. is being developed with American tastes in mind. It will migrate to a slightly bigger platform and get more rugged styling, Vezel Chief Engineer Kojiro Okabe said. The changes may address, among other issues, complaints about the HR-V's tight packaging.

    Okabe demurred on whether the U.S. would also get a hybrid option. Honda wants 40 percent of its sales in major markets to come from full-electric or fuel cell vehicles by 2030 — and 100 percent from those zero-emission technologies in all markets by 2040. Having a hybrid HR-V in one of its biggest markets may help that electrification shift.
