All the Historic Moments from the Oscars 2021!

It was a historic night at the 2021 Academy Awards!

A lot of firsts took place during the 93rd Oscars, which aired on Sunday night (April 25).

The 2021 Oscars already had historic nominations, with Steve Yeun becoming the first-ever East Asian American actor to be nominated for Best Actor, Riz Ahmed was the first Muslim actor nominated for Best Actor, and Chloe Zhao becoming the first woman of Asian descent to be nominated for Best Director. This year’s ceremony also marked the first time two women were nominated for Best Director – Chloe for Nomadland and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman. Keeping scrolling for all the historic moments at the 2021 Oscars…

Chloe Zhao became the first woman of color to ever win Best Director for Nomadland, and the second woman in history to win the award. The first woman winner was Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker back in 2008.

Jamika Wilson and Mia Neal became the first Black women to win the Oscar for Hair and Makeup. They won the award, alongside Sergio Lopez-Rivera, for their work on Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Youn Yuh-jung became the first Korean actress to win Best Supporting Actress for her role in Minari.

At the age of 89, Ann Roth has become the oldest woman alive to win an Oscar. She took home the award for Best Achievement in Costume Design for her work on Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

At the age of 83, Anthony Hopkins becomes the oldest actor to win an Oscar in one of the acting categories. Tonight, he won Best Actor for his role in The Father.

Diane Warren is the most nominated woman to never win an Oscar. She has been nominated 12 times in the Best Original Song category.

Glenn Close is the most nominated actor to never win an Oscar. She has been nominated for eight Oscars across the course of her 40+ year movie career. The late Peter O’Toole also had eight Oscar nominations, but he did receive a non-competitive honorary Oscar in 2003.
