Washington: The Oscars in 2021, held at the Dolby Theater and Union Station, was a star-studded event. Although the 93rd annual Academy Awards were mostly unexpected and unpredictable, it achieved surprising victories in the lead actor categories for Anthony Hopkins and Frances McDormand.

According to Variety, another big shock was that this time that the category best picture was not announced last time, but that they saved the main categories for it.

The fact that the ceremony was taking place, even with some major changes, added to the list of surprises. There was his new place at Union Station and a revolving audience. Many presenters spoke from the audience and it worked perfectly.

As expected, the story was made by the talented filmmaker Chloe Zhao, who won the best director award for her work on ‘Nomadland’, which also won the best picture award. Both categories for sidekicks correspond to the SAG award winners.

Here are some of the biggest hints and surprises from the 93rd edition of the Annual Academy Awards:

Snub: ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’

The award-winning film by Aaron Sorkin, which won the SAG Ensemble Award and won the evening with six nominations, was the only candidate for best pictures to go home empty-handed. This was a surprise as it is considered a strong competitor for the best picture, but do not be surprised if Sorkin is back soon. He is currently taking ‘Being the Ricardos’ along with Oscar winners Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem and JK Simmons.

Surprise: Frances McDormand, best actress for ‘Nomadland’

As she starred and achieved the best winner of the picture, coupled with the conquest of the BAFTA for her beautiful turn as Fern in ‘Nomadland’, it’s not such a shocking move for McDormand with her third best actress Oscar . But the category went on all season, with Andra Day winning Globes, Viola Davis winning SAG and Carey Mulligan winning the Critics’ Choice and Spirit Award.

Snub: Chadwick Boseman, ‘Ma Rainey’ Black Bottom ‘/ Surprise: Anthony Hopkins for’ The Father ‘

As the category for best actor shifted to the end, it felt as if the producers of the series were aiming for a posthumous Chadwick Boseman victory. He won both the Golden Globe and the SAG Award, but Hopkins took the BAFTA home, which did rest some people. In the likely stiff race to the end, Hopkins became the winner and won his second Oscar when he won the first one for best actor in 1992 for his performance in ‘The Silence of the Lambs’.

Surprise: ‘The Father’ for the best adapted screenplay

While several people predicted a victory for ‘The Father’, nothing was certain. Many people feel the best forerunner ‘Nomadland’, while ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’ wins the WGA award, where ‘The Father’ and ‘Nomadland’ are not eligible. Eventually, director Florian Zeller received the award for adapting his own play, with the help of Christopher Hampton, who won in 1989 in this category for ‘Dangerous Liaisons’.

Surprise: Erik Messerschmidt, best film for ‘Mank’

Although Messerschmidt deserved praise for his beautiful black-and-white cinematography, Joshua James Richard was in the category, which is much appreciated for his work in ‘Nomadland’. It was a difficult category, chock-full of greats, and a case could be made for any winner, but Messerschmidt’s beautiful work depicting Hollywood of old eventually won the award.

Surprise: Non-rushed awards speeches

Perhaps the most striking change during the Oscars this year was that there was no orchestra playing out winners’ speeches. In fact, Questlove did an excellent job of DJing the proceedings, and winners were allowed to take their time, resulting in amazing moments. Yuh-Jung Youn was keeping the crowd going while she tried to understand, and was an Oscar winner. The ceremony provided a lesson for future performances to make the winners speak.

Snub: ‘One Night in Miami’

Regina King’s debut as a director was the evening with three nominations, adapted screenplay, supporting actor and best song. It was the latter category, where the song was named ‘Speak Now’, where it had a strong chance. But the award eventually went to the song ‘Fight for You’ by ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’, featuring music and lyrics by HER, music by D’Mile as Dernst Emile II and lyrics by Tiara Thomas.

The 93rd Oscars took place two months later than originally planned, due to the impact the COVID-19 pandemic over the entertainment industry.

The nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards were announced on March 15 this year. This is only the fourth time in history that the Academy Awards have been postponed.
