Sundar Pichai says Google to contribute Rs 135 crore for Covid-19 fight in India

With cases hitting an all-time high and hospitals struggling to cope, Covid-19 has had a devastating effect on India and its people. Keeping the current situation in mind, Google has stepped in with funding for medical supplies and to help communities in general. Google CEO Sundar Pichai took to Twitter and said, “Devastated to see the worsening Covid crisis in India. Google & Googlers are providing Rs 135 Crore in funding to @GiveIndia, @UNICEF for medical supplies, orgs supporting high-risk communities, and grants to help spread critical information.” Pichai’s tweet also had a link to a blog where Google has detailed how it will help in with efforts in fighting the current situation.

noted, “Our Google community and their families are feeling the devastating impact, too. We’re asking ourselves what more we can do as a company to ensure people get the information and support they need to keep their families and communities healthy and safe.”

Google announced Rs 135 crore in new funding from India. This includes two grants from Google.org, Google’s philanthropic arm, totalling Rs 20 crore. The first is to non-profit organisation GiveIndia, which will provide cash assistance to families hit hardest by the crisis to help with their everyday expenses. The second grant will go to UNICEF, which will help in getting urgent medical supplies, including oxygen and testing equipment, to where it’s needed most in India.

Apart from that, Gupta said on the blog that so far 900 Google employees have contributed Rs 3.7 crore to organisations supporting high-risk and marginalised communities.

Further, Gupta explained that this funding also includes increased Ad Grant support for public health information campaigns. “Since last year, we’ve helped MyGov and the World Health Organization reach audiences with messages focused on how to stay safe and facts about vaccines. We’re increasing our support today with an additional Rs 112 crore in ad Grants to local health authorities and nonprofits for more language coverage options.”
