T’PURAM: Active Covid-19 cases in the state shot past the 2-lakh mark (2,18,893) on Sunday when the highest single-day spike of 28,469 cases was reported.
At least 26,318 persons had contracted the virus through local transmission while the source of infection in 1,768 others remains unknown.
Ernakulam reported the highest number of cases, 4,468 followed by Kozhikode, 3,998, Malappuram, 3,123, Thrissur, 2,871, Kottayam, 2,666, Thiruvananthapuram, 2,020, Kannur 1,843, Palakkad, 1,820, Alappuzha, 1,302, Kollam, 1,209, Pathanamthitta, 871, Idukki, 848, Kasaragod, 771 and Wayanad, 659.
The test positivity rate was 22.46% after 1,26,773 samples were tested in 24 hours. To date, 1,51,16,722 samples have been sent for testing.
The recovery count on the day was 8,122 taking the total so far to 11,81,324. Meanwhile, 30 recent deaths that were confirmed as Covid-related has taken the toll to 5,111.
On the day, 338 people that arrived from outside had tested positive. A total of 116 persons, including 108 that returned from the UK have tested for the coronavirus in the state. Of them, 11 have been diagnosed with a new strain.
The district-wise cases of local transmission: Ernakulam, 4,444, Kozhikode, 3,946, Malappuram, 2,951, Thrissur, 2,847, Kottayam, 2,552, Thiruvananthapuram, 1,765, Kannur, 1,619, Palakkad, 666, Alappuzha, 1,301, Kollam, 1,196, Pathanamthitta, 804, Idukki, 828, Kasaragod, 743 and Wayanad, 656.
At least 45 healthcare workers were infected on the day, including 13 from Kannur. Thrissur had eight, Thiruvananthapuram, seven, Kasaragod, four, Kottayam and Ernakulam, three each, Kollam and Palakkad, two each, and Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Wayanad, had one each, cases among healthcare workers.
The district-wise number of recoveries on the day: Thiruvananthapuram, 861, Kollam, 674, Pathanamthitta, 303, Alappuzha, 675, Kottayam, 538, Idukki, 247, Ernakulam, 1,002, Thrissur, 769, Palakkad, 375, Malappuram, 754, Kozhikode, 1,099, Wayanad, 199, Kannur, 356 and Kasaragod, 270.
There are 4,70,558 persons under observation in the state, of whom 4,50,993 are at their homes or institutional quarantine centres and 19,565 are in isolation at hospitals, including 3,279 people who were admitted on the day.
With the addition of 13 new places, the number of hotspots in the state has increased to 547.
