Karnataka Covid lockdown news live: Govt reserves 75% private hospital beds for Covid patients

Bengaluru district, which now has the highest active burden in the country, reported an all-time singleday high of 17,342 Covid-19 cases and 149 deaths on Saturday, making up nearly 60% of the daily infections and over 70% of deaths in the state. Karnataka too reported record numbers — 29,438 cases and 208 deaths — in a single day. With this, the total number of active cases touched 2.34 lakh, at a positivity rate of 15.52%. Nearly 70% of this active tally, over 1.6 lakh cases, is in Bengaluru alone. And the city’s active caseload is nearly 26% of its total infections, against 18% statewide. CM BS Yediyurappa said the Centre has increased the state’s daily allocation of oxygen from 300MT to 800MT and Remdesivir from 50,000 vials to 1.22 lakh vials till April 30. Chief secretary P Ravi Kumar maintained there was no shortage of oxygen and the problem pertained to distribution. Stay with TOI for all the latest updates:

Govt reserves 75% private hospital beds for Covid

The state government on Sunday issued an order reserving 75% of beds in private healthcare facilities for Covid-19 patients referred by it or government agencies. While the order said this would also include high dependency units and ICUs, it did not specify how many such beds would be available for patients.

Patients from Bengaluru seek care in Mangaluru

The shortage of beds in Bengaluru and other cities is forcing some Covid-19 patients to seek treatment in Dakshina Kannada. The district health and family welfare department is noticing a rise in the number of such patients. “We don’t deny them treatment. But a large number of patients from other places is likely to choke the system here,” said deputy commissioner KV Rajendra. A spokesperson of KS Hegde Hospital, Derlakatte, said it had treated Covid-19 patients from Bengaluru, Pune and Delhi. A few days ago, an elderly couple from Bengaluru was treated. “Some of the patients have been discharged,” the spokesperson added.

Patients share beds in some district hospitals in Karnataka

With Covid-19 cases soaring across the state, hospitals are facing a severe shortage of beds. At a few places, patients from the same family are reportedly sharing beds. Videos posted on social media on Saturday showed two Covid-19 patients, a man and his five-year-old son, sitting on the same bed. The visuals were from Madikeri District Hospital in Kodagu. “Not only have we been forced to share the bed, but doctors are not attending us. The situation is dire.
