That's literally what just happened
Bought some yesterday for 75 cents a pound
Today went to the same store and they're now $2.99 a pound
Same grapes as yesterday
Noticed this has happened before with grapes
No other produce changes price so drastically and unpredictably
Red apples have been 99 cents a pound and bananas have been 59 cents a pound forever and never change

How can grapes be 75 cents/lb one day and then $2.99/lb the next?

In the off season a lot of that produce has to be imported from warmer climate countries, like Chile. It's much more expensive in the off season but at least you can get it year round. Hard to say that is what happened to you but see if the origin changed from one day to the next.
