
The 93rd Academy Awards were held in a unique fashion in 2021 as the attendees observed social distancing while going maskless. Regina King opened the ceremony as the awards were again hostless this year. The presenters took the stage to announce the winners and the evening concluded with Joaquin Phoenix announcing the award for Best Actor. While many were rooting for Chadwick Boseman to get honoured, the award was won by Anthony Hopkins for The Father.
Nomadland won big this year. The film won Best Picture, Best Actress for Frances McDormand and Best Director for Chloe Zhao. Chloe is the second woman to win this year in the Academy’s 93 years of giving awards.
Judas and the Black Messiah, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Mank, Soul and Sound of Metal – all won two Oscars each at the ceremony.
Despite the year that was driven by a global pandemic, the films that dominated the award ceremony were quite impressive. Many of these released either in film festivals or streaming platforms.
In the ‘In Memoriam’ section of the 93rd Academy Awards, actor Irrfan Khan and costume designer Bhanu Athaiya were honoured. The two legends passed away in 2020.
Changing the tradition, this year the last award for the evening was Best Actor unlike previous years when the ceremony always ended with the Best Picture award.

Chloe Zhao directed Nomadland wins Best Picture Oscar. The film starred Frances McDormand in the lead role. Zhao is helming Marvel's The Eternals next.

"Fight for You" from Judas and the Black Messiah wins Best Original Song at the 93rd Academy Awards. The award has been given to D'Mile and H.E.R. for music and, H.E.R. and Tiara Thomas for lyric.
Soul wins the Oscar for Best Original Score. The other nominees were - Mank, Minari, News of the World and Da 5 Bloods.
Tyler Perry wins Humanitarian Award at the Oscars 2021. Viola Davis presents the award.
Sound of Metal's Mikkel E.G. Nielsen wins Best Film Editing at the 93rd Academy Awards. The other films nominated in this category were - The Father, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Promising Young Woman, Nomadland.
Erik Messerschmidt wins Best Cinematography for Mank. This is the second award for David Fincher's film.
Mank wins its first Oscar for Best Production Design. Donald Graham Burt wins for Production Design and Jan Pascaledouble-dagger wins for Set Decoration.
Youn Yuh-jung wins Best Supporting Actress for Minari. The other nominees were - Amanda Seyfried for Mank, Maria Bakalova for Borat Subsequent MovieFilm, Olivia Colman for The Father and Glenn Close for Hillbilly Elegy.
Tenet wins the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Love and Monsters, The Midnight Sky, Mulan and The One and Only Ivan were the other nominees.
My Octopus Teacher wins Best Documentary Feature. The other nominees were - Collective, Crip Camp, The Mole Agent, Time.
