AMRITSAR: Expressing annoyance at the statement of a Muslim man in Pakistan in the guise of a Sikh, against the French people and French interests, the European Sikh leadership has appealed to the Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to take strict action against such elements who have a propaganda which can be detrimental to the religious and economic interests of Sikh community of Europe.
While talking to TOI over phone from Germany, a local Sikh leader Gurdeep Singh Randhawa said, "The Sikh leadership of Europe strongly condemn the nonsense statement of a turban wearing Muslim who has no knowledge of Sikh religion, we are living very peacefully in Europe maintaining a respectable status in the society."
Notably a Pakistani Muslim man who introduces himself as Qasam Dogar Singh and sports a beard and turban has uploaded a provocative statement on social media inciting Sikhs of Pakistan to not only boycott the French products but also ‘punish’ the French people. In recent past there had been violent protests across Pakistan which were primarily led by activists of hardliner Islamist group Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) demanding expulsion of the French ambassador. The Islamist jehadi’s had been criticising French president Emmanuel Macron for defending the publication of caricatures of Prophet Mohammed.
Randhawa who is the first turban wearing Sikh to have been elected councillor from Germany’s Amt Wachsenburg county representing ruling Angela Merkle’s Christlich Demokratische Union party, said he had held discussions with the Sikh leaders spread across the Europe and had decided to approach Imran Khan expressing their concerns.
"We are using and will continue to use the French products since European Union has common interests", said Randhawa adding that Pakistan’s Sikh leadership would also be approached urging them to disassociate themselves from such elements and make an announcement for the same.
Ironically, Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Satwant Singh has already agreed to Dogar's statement of boycotting French products.
"Pakistan must realise France and Germany's foreign politics are not different and will stand against this kind of dirty political play of the likes of Dogar. They can convince only a handful of Sikhs living under their control but not Sikhs living in the world" said Randhawa.
