GUWAHATI, April 24: 14 more patients succumbed to Covid-19 on Saturday taking the death toll in the Covid-19 pandemic to 1,186.
With 2,236 fresh Covid-19 positive cases, the total number of positive cases has gone up to 2,35,689 in the state.
Of fresh cases, 815 have been reported from Kamrup Metropolitan district.
A total of 69,094 tests were conducted in the state on Saturday. The positivity rate for the day was 3.24 per cent.
Eminent litterateur and celebrated writer Homen Borgohain tested positive for Covid-19 on Saturday.
The 88-year-old was taken to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for his treatment.
Borgohain is currently the editor-in-chief of Assamese daily Niyomiya Barta. He was also the president of Asam Sahitya Sabha.
Homen Borgohain was also awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in Assamese Language for his novel ‘Pita Putra’. Later in 2015, he returned his award in protest against the lack of tolerance being created in Indian society.
His other works include novels like; Saudor Puteke Nau Meli Jay, Halodhiya Soraye Baudhan Khai, Astarag, Nisongota, Edinar Diary, Bisannata and more.
A woman succumbed to Covid-19 infection in Hojai on Saturday.
The woman identified as Phulsundari Devi of South Hill Colony in Lumding, who was admitted in Kalapahar Covid Care Hospital on April 21, succumbed to the infection on Friday night.
Another Covid patient succumbed to the infection at Tezpur Medical College & Hospital on Saturday.
He has been identified as Dilip Das, a resident of Marabhoroli, Mazgaon.
Within 24-hour, four persons died due to Covid-19 at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in upper Assam, Dibrugarh.
On Saturday, Babul Mondal (61) died due to Covid-19 at AMCH. Babul Mondal was the resident of Bachipara in Dibrugarh and he was admitted at AMCH after he was detected Covid-19 positive on April 23.
Dolly Gogoi (62) died due to Covid-19 infection at AMCH on Friday. Gogoi was a resident of Bordoloi Nagar in Tinsukia district. She has been undergoing treatment at AMCH for the last two days.
On Friday, Srimanta Borgohain (48) and Deepak Shahu (45) died due to Covid-19 infection at AMCH.
Hojai
30 people tested positive for Covid-19 in Hojai district, taking the total number of Covid positive cases in the district to 234.
Rapid Antigen Test was conducted on 2082 people while RT-PCR test was conducted on 41 swab samples.
28 patients recovered from infection in the district.
Dibrugarh
3,879 Covid tests were conducted and out of those 128 positive cases were detected on Saturday.
Dibrugarh University on Friday postponed all ongoing and upcoming examinations after 16 students of the university tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. Three hostels of the university were declared containment zones by the health authorities after the detection of cases.
Nagaon
123 people tested positive for Covid-19 on Saturday, taking the total number of Covid positive cases in the district to 570.
Of those fresh cases, 8 were immediately hospitalised while the rest were put in home quarantine.
Rapid Antigen Test was conducted on 3,114 people while RT-PCR test was conducted on 52 swab samples on Saturday.
38 positive patients, including 34 in home quarantine were discharged from hospital after they recovered from the infection.
Meanwhile, joint director of health service, Dr Atul Pator said that there is sufficient oxygen cylinder in stock to combat with the virus till date.
Tezpur
Two more fresh cases were detected in Sonitpur district on Saturday.
The district has a total of 8,848 active positive cases.
Altogether 76,856 people have been vaccinated in the district till Saturday.
Raha
With the rising number of Covid-19 cases being reported from across Raha, the office of the district magistrate in Nagaon has declared two villages Pohupurikhaiti and Dighaldari under Raha revenue circle as containment zones.
Dr. Lakhidhar Das, sub-divisional medical officer of Barapujia Block PHC, said that the health department will also conduct intensive house-to-house checking, contact tracing and sampling in the neighbouring areas of the containment zones. The primary focus would be laid on the high-risk population, including the elderly, children and pregnant women, he added.
Lakhimpur
All the primary schools in Lakhimpur district have been closed on Saturday as the Covid-19 positive cases exceeded the 100-mark.
