India records close to 3.5 lakh Covid cases in a new record high

New Delhi: India continues to report more than 3 lakh Covid cases fourth day in a row. The country logged a total of 3,49,691 Covid cases and 2,767 deaths in the last 24 hours, a new single-day high since the pandemic began last year, according to the health ministry's data released on Sunday.

The active cases in India stood at 26,82,751 on Sunday, while the total Covid-19 cases registered so far reached 1,69,60,172.

A total of 2,17,113 Covid infected people were recovered in the last 24 hours, taking the total recovery so far to 1,40,85,110.

"India Covid Death Toll"

India registered over 2,000 deaths for the fifth consecutive day with the highest spike in single-day deaths. On Saturday, India reported 2,624 deaths, on Friday 2,263, while on Thursday 2,104 deaths and 2,023 deaths were reported on Wednesday.

A total of 1,92,311 have lost their lives due to Covid-19 in India since last year.

The Health Ministry said that a total of 17,19,588 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. So far, a total of 27,79,18,810 samples have been tested in the country.

According to the government data, a total of 25,36,612 people were also vaccinated in the same period, taking the total inoculation count to 14,09,16,417.

Since April 15, India has continued to report over 2 lakh new Covid-19 cases on a daily basis.

The top five states which have contributed to India's total daily tally include Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Delhi.

"Global Covid caseload tops 146.1mn"

The overall global Covid-19 caseload has topped 146.1 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 3.09 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

In its latest update on Sunday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 146,110,536 and 3,096,693, respectively.

The US is the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 32,044,974 and 571,920, respectively, according to the CSSE.

In terms of infections, India follows in the second place with 16,960,172 cases.

The other countries with more than two million confirmed coronavirus cases are Brazil (14,308,215), France (5,534,656), Russia (4,699,988), Turkey (4,591,416), the UK (4,418,710), Italy (3,949,517), Spain (3,468,617), Germany (3,291,293), Argentina (2,845,872), Colombia (2,757,274), Poland (2,751,632), Iran (2,377,039) and Mexico (2,326,738), the CSSE figures showed.

In terms of deaths, Brazil comes second with 389,492 fatalities.

Nations with a death toll of over 50,000 are Mexico (214,853), India (192,311), the UK (127,670), Italy (119,021), Russia (106,108), France (102,872), Germany (81,610), Spain (77,591), Colombia (70,886), Iran (69,120), Poland (65,222), Argentina (61,474), Peru (59,440) and South Africa (54,125).
