In the wake of an increase in Covid-19 cases across the country, three states, rajasthan, kerala, and Uttrakhand, recently urged the federal government to restart the distribution of free food grains to the country's 81 crores poor under the Pradhan Mantri Garib kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY). The scheme, which started last year during the first wave of the pandemic, was also implemented by four MPs including the head of the ncp and former Agriculture minister Sharad Pawar. All those covered by the National Food Security Act received 5 kg rice or wheat per person and one kg of pulses per family under PMGKAY. This covered the months of april to november 2020, and it came as a huge relief to poor families all over the country
