After  waiting for 30mins, the patient's family was told that no beds were available and that they should try another government hospital in Yelahanka, about 25 km away.“We were sent from Sagar Apollo Hospital to Yelahanka. “We don't know if he'll live,” said the patient's attendants.

Across Bengaluru's government hospitals, similar reports have emerged, with many Covid-19 patients dying while waiting for ICU ventilator beds. Mild and moderate patients have also been recorded waiting in hospital reception for three days in wheelchairs, strapped to oxygen machines, for a vacant bed with an oxygen supply. Even though the victoria Hospital had no beds, a man with a patient said, "I pulled some strings and got my relative a bed." After their elderly mother sat for 3 days waiting for a bed, one family confirmed paying a bribe of Rs 40,000 for a bed at a state facility in south Bengaluru.

The city's shortage of hospital beds, especially ICU ventilator beds, is due to the city's spiralling Covid-19 deaths, which reached 124 on Friday. The city's seven Covid-19 crematoriums are working overtime to cremate about20-25 dead bodies each day.

The dramatic increase in Covid-19 cases and deaths has led karnataka chief minister B.S Yediyurappa to declare the situation "out of control." Yediyurappa ordered a 10-fold rise in ICU ventilator beds in bengaluru during a meeting with health officials on Friday.
