Texas Weather Video Shows Huge Funnel Clouds After Tornado Warning

Footage shows the dramatic moments that funnel clouds barrelled through northern Texas as residents in the region braced themselves following a severe thunderstorm warning on Friday.

The video shared on Twitter was taken by Prescott Bishop, whose handle description says "catastrophe meteorologist," and shows the spectacular sight near Quanah, in Hardeman County, in the north-central part of the state.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Norman tweeted that there was a severe thunderstorm over the Texas panhandle which was expected to cross into Hardeman and Foard Counties.

"Greatest tornado risk will be for areas near Quanah and Crowell with increasing risk near Vernon and Frederick. Stay alert!," the tweet added.

In a series of tweets, Bishop described the pursuit of the storms. Sharing another warning by the NWS Storm Prediction Center, Bishop wrote: "First chase of the year!"

In a later tweet, video in which a voice is heard saying "we've got sisters," is shared, displaying two funnel clouds next to each other, whipping up dust and dirt.

In another clip, Bishop tweeted: "Here's another video of the sisters right as they formed. I think this one might be even better."

A funnel cloud is a cone-shaped formation that extends out from the bottom of a cloud and hangs towards the ground without actually reaching it, according to the U.K. Met Office. When they do reach the ground they become a tornado.

Other footage shows the funnel cloud angling down onto the horizon in a V-shape, while debris is sprayed up below.

Bishop also shared still images, with one tweet saying: "Delightful structure on the storm south of Quanah. Looking at it from the East." In other tweets with dramatic images, Bishop said: "This is why we chase y'all," and "this is insane."

Storm chasers in Texas posted other dramatic weather images on Twitter. One showed a tornado moving southwest of Vernon, while others twisters moving across the countryside and in between windmills.

One still image tweeted by Daniel Shaw showed a slim tornado between wind turbines south of Vernon.

Meanwhile, residents in the Dallas-Fort Worth region reported heavy rain, strong winds, and hail as large as ping pong balls, as a severe thunderstorm watch remained in effect Friday night, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

There was also heavy hail and flooding reported in Richardson, Texas. Thunderstorms were expected to move into the South and Southeast of the state on Saturday morning, according to forecasters, Fox News reported.
