NASHIK: The first Oxygen Express carrying four tankers of liquid oxygen from Visakhapatnam reached Nashik on Saturday morning.
The four tankers carried 15 metric tonnes of liquid oxygen each.
While two tankers would be sent to Ahmednagar, two will be kept for Nashik.
The availability of the 30 metric tonnes of liquid oxygen is a breather to the district which has been reeling under an acute shortage of medical oxygen over the past month.
The train left from Visakhapatnam carrying a total of seven oxygen tankers.
Three tankers were unloaded at Nagpur on Friday night, the remaining seven reached Nashik.
Madhuri Pawar, assistant director, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Nashik said owing to the rise in the number of Covid-19 patients, currently, the demand for medical oxygen was 105 metric tonnes.
However, the supply to the district is approximately 90 metric tonnes. Thus, the shortage is consistently felt.
The FDA has written to the state government about the need for additional medical oxygen supply to the city owing to the increasing number of patients.
MP Hemant Godse was also present when the oxygen train arrived at the Nashik Road Railway Station.
