Hyderabad: All meat and chicken shops in the city were closed on Sunday 25 April on the occasion of Shri Mahavir Jayanti.
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) commissioner Lokesh Kumar said in a circular on Friday that all sheep, chicken and cattle shops in the city would be closed on Sunday.
Liquor stores were also ordered to close Sunday.
The GHMC commissioner instructed the officials of the veterinary department to ensure that all shopkeepers comply with these regulations.
Why is Mahavir Jayanti celebrated?
Mahavir Jayanti is one of the most important festivals among the Jain community and marks the birthday of Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. This year, Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated on April 25 to preserve peace, harmony and spread the teachings of Lord Mahavira.
