MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell Wins Razzie Award for 2020 Election 'Documentary'
MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell scooped two awards at the annual Razzies ceremony on Saturday for his movie about the 2020 presidential election. The event highlights the worst aspects of film over the previous year.
Lindell was awarded Worst Actor for his role in his own production, Absolute Proof. Billed as a "documentary," the two-hour movie posits that a Chinese cyberattack flipped the election from former President Donald Trump to President Joe Biden.
There is no evidence to support the movie's central claim and the film ran with a disclaimer on conservative news network OAN in February. It has also been banned from YouTube.
Absolute Proof also won the award for Worst Picture, beating Sia's film Music, which was widely panned for its depiction of autism and for casting a neurotypical actor to play a character on the spectrum.
The movie was considered a contender for both the top Razzies that eventually went to Lindell.
Sia did pick up Worst Director, however, while Music stars Kate Hudson and Maddie Ziegler won Worst Actress and Worst Supporting Actress respectively.
Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani also won two Razzies at this year's ceremony but they were unrelated to his 2020 election work on behalf of former President Trump.
Giuliani was awarded Worst Supporting Actor for his cameo in Sacha Baron-Cohen's movie Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, where his apparent fumbling with his trousers raised eyebrows.
The former mayor also won the award for Worst Screen Combo. In this case, the combo was Giuliani and his zipper, featuring in the same scene from the Borat sequel.
"Oh boy, here comes the demands for a recount," the voiceover announcer joked about Lindell and Giuliani being named winners. The event once again took place without an in-person ceremony.
The Razzies are also known as the Golden Raspberries and take place each year a day before the Academy Awards.
This was the 41st edition of the parody awards show. Some famous faces have shown up in person to accept the awards, perhaps most famously Halle Berry, who won Worst Actress for 2004's Catwoman.
The winners are decided by the votes of 1,097 "Voting Razzie Members" based in the U.S. and abroad, according to their website. Winners are presented with statuettes worth $4.97.
"Both the top trophy and Worst Actor awards were taken by that 'My Pillow Guy,' Mike Lindell for the two-hour, fake news snooze-fest Absolute Proof," the Razzies' announcement said.
This year, the Razzies' Board of Governors also chose to give a special award to the year 2020, saying it would acknowledge "that way more than just the movies stank last year."
