MANGALURU: Mangaluru city police arrested a man, within hours after they booked a case, following a video of a dog tied to a bike being dragged along a service road near NITK Surathkal going viral.
The arrested accused is Neelappa,30, who stays near NITK Surathkal, who is a construction worker, and hails from North Karnataka.
Giving out details on Friday, N Shashi Kumar, city police commissioner, Mangaluru, said the incident took place on April 15, and eyewitness Jeevan had shot the video. The same was brought to the notice of police, after which they registered a suo moto case, and Neelappa was arrested on Friday. Another person involved in the crime is on the run.
Shashi Kumar said according to Neelappa, the dog was dead, and he was dragging it to a nearby place to bury it. However, Jeevan, claims the dog was alive when he shot the video. “We will do a video analysis, and also seek legal opinion in the case,” said Kumar.
On being asked whether the animal was the pet of Neelappa, Shashi Kumar said that it was not. The dog was a stray, and Neelappa claims that he was taking it for burial. “However, whether the dog was dead or alive, there was no need for this inhumane behaviour,” he said.mA
