MANGALURU: Animal lovers across Mangaluru are looking for people who witnessed two men dragging a stray dog tied to their bike on a city road a few days ago. The video of the incident reported on a service road near NITK Surathkal had gone viral on Thursday. Mangaluru city police were quick to act and detain one person involved in the act within hours of the complaint being filed. Suma Nayak, trustee of Animal Care Trust (ACT), told TOI, "We received the video on Wednesday night. Jeevan, who had recorded the video on April 15 while returning from work around 8.30pm along with his colleague, had sent it to the trust. The challenges were many and we had to first convince him to file a case," she said Jeevan was worried about the visits to police station and court. "However, he agreed since this was for the sake of an innocent life and to prevent such incidents in future. I drafted the complaint. I also shared the video on various platforms on social media on Thursday, and within an hour, it went viral. Within a few hours, one of the accused was picked up by the police," Suma said. Our fight does not end here. On one hand, we are gathering witnesses and on the other, for us, it is important to know the motive of the crime. The arrested accused made a false claim that they were dragging a dead dog. We request the city police to find the carcass of the dog and conduct a postmortem," she said.
