Volkswagen's ID.4 will race in the Mexican 1000 Rally

When the Mexican 1000 Rally kicks off on April 25th, Volkswagen's new ID.4 SUV will be one of the cars competing in the grueling 1,141-mile off-road race. Professional driver Tanner Foust and Rhys Millen Racing have modified VW's EV to drive across the Baja peninsula. While the ID.4 won't be the first EV to take part in the Mexican 1000 Rally (the SRI EV1 earned that distinction back in 2013), it will be the first production-based one to do so. Rhys Millen Racing left the stock 201-horsepower electric motor and 82kWh battery in place. What it tweaked to make the car race-ready was the suspension. It raised the radiator, added rally-style coil-over struts and steel skid-plates to the underside of the car. They also fitted 18-inch wheels, as well as tires with more sidewall protection.

Additionally, they modified the car's interior to add a roll cage, racing seats and additional screens so Foust can monitor things like battery temperature. When it comes to recharging the power cell out in the desert, the team will use a portable biofuel generator to power a 50kW fast charger. During the loop event, they plan to try and finish about 98 percent of the stages without stopping to recharge.

As EVs have become a more frequent sight on public roads, they're also racing more often. It's not just Formula E running competitions anymore either. This year, Extreme E held its first-ever off-road race, with a field made entirely of electric vehicles. And this year's Mexican 1000 likely won't be the last time you'll see Foust and company drive an EV in the rally. He said the team already has "several ideas of what we'd like to do next year."

The Chevrolet Tracker also has an upgraded intelligent speech recognition function where users can order the vehicle to complete simple tasks such as opening the skylight, switching on the air-conditioning, and turning on the headlights, among others. Further, also equipped in the China-version Tracker are Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Pedestrian Collision Mitigation (PCM), Forward Collision Alert (FCA), Following Distance Indicator (FDI), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), a reverse camera and electrically-heated exterior rearview mirrors. With all these, plus the fact that the sales figures show a fascination with SUVs, the possibility of the Chevrolet Tracker being welcomed with open arms is pretty high.     (Bloomberg) -- Informed Portfolio Management, a Swedish hedge fund that had relied on statistical models to devise its strategies, is set to shut its doors and return investor capital after losing roughly $4 billion during the pandemic.IPM, whose main owner is Stockholm-based investment firm Catella AB, had assets under management of close to $5 billion in late 2019, before the pandemic hit. A year later, that amount had more than halved to $2 billion, with the investor exodus since then depleting assets to about $750 million.“The recent investment market for systematic macro-funds has unfortunately been very challenging and IPM has had weak returns and large capital outflows,” Catella said in a statement on Thursday. “IPM will ensure that all investors are treated fairly. This includes that all investors will be able to redeem their capital in the coming months according to each fund’s specific liquidity rules.”IPM had used quantitative strategies, which rely on mathematical models instead of on-the-ground analysis of portfolio assets. But the historical statistical models the fund built proved unequal to the task of predicting how markets would move during the volatility brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.“We believe that there is definitely a future for quantitative hedge funds,” IPM’s chairman of the board, Lars Ericsson, said in an interview. “But for our part, we could not, from a business perspective, pursue it further on the asset base we had.”Read: A Hedge Fund Boss Explains the Trouble With Ethical InvestingIPM joins a growing list of hedge funds shutting down in recent years as investors rethink their allocations to the industry. More hedge funds have closed than started in the last six years, with 770 of them shuttering in 2020, according to data compiled by Hedge Fund Research Inc.Last year was particularly tough for computer-driven quant funds. Algorithms largely failed to decipher the impact of a rapidly moving virus and the response from central banks to contain economic damage. The market selloff in March last year and subsequent recovery humbled some of the most sophisticated of quants -- most notably behemoths such as Renaissance Technologies, Winton and Two Sigma.IPM was founded over two decades ago.
