Tamil Nadu Covid-19 curfew news live: Paid vax huge burden on poor, says Madras HC

Tamil Nadu government will provide free vaccines for all from May 1 during the next phase of the inoculation drive covering all above 18 years. Paid vax huge burden on poor, says Madras HC

The Madras HC on Thursday chastised the Centre for leaving those aged between 18 and 45 in the lurch by making them pay for the Covid-19 vaccine. “It will be a huge burden for the poor”, the court observed while taking suo motu cognizance of TOI and other media reports on diversion of oxygen to other states without the consent of TN, and shortage of Remdesivir.

Over 28,000 cases filed against TN mask violators in a day

On Wednesday alone, the Tamil Nadu police filed 28,044 cases against face mask violators. The Chennai police on Wednesday seized 14 vehicles, including a lorry, for plying during the night curfew.

Pondy records highest 1-day spike of 987 new infections

Puducherry on Thursday hit a grim record of its highest single-day spike in Covid-19 cases since the start of the pandemic. The UT reported 987 fresh cases as of 10am on Thursday. The previous highest single-day spike of 715 cases was reported on April 17.

33 of state’s 59 deaths are from Chennai region

Tamil Nadu on Thursday registered 12,652 new cases, pushing its active case tally to 89,428. With 59 deaths, the toll rose to 13,317 while the state’s cumulative case tally was revised to 10.37 lakh. While Chennai, the worst affected district, reported 3,780 new cases, 27 others reported a three-digit increase in cases. Among these, at least 20 districts had more than 200 new cases. Of the 21 districts that reported deaths, Chennai reported the highest at 24. Chengalpet and Madurai reported five deaths each, Tiruvallur reported three and Kanyakumari and Nagapattinam reported two deaths each.

Oxygen bed capacity doubled since last year

Oxygen bed capacity has been doubled since last year, and 32,942 of the 54,417 beds in Covid facilities are now oxygen beds. The TN medical services corporation has stocked adequate medicines, and lifesaving ventilators and high flow nasal canula. Anti-viral drugs like Remdesivir have been adequately procured and distributed to taluk-level hospitals and stock will be available for the next 20 days.

Vaccination will be free in TN even for those in 18-45 group

A day after the Serum Institute of India announced that its Covid-19 vaccine ‘Covishield’ will be supplied to state governments at a cost of Rs 400 per dose, the Tamil Nadu government on Thursday said it will provide free vaccines for all from May 1 during the next phase of the inoculation drive covering all above 18 years.
