Chad President Idriss Deby Itno, 68, the three-decade-long leader of the central African nation has died of wounds suffered during a visit to frontline troops battling a rebel group, hours after winning yet another six-year term. The military announced Itno’s son as the nation’s interim leader.
South Korea A court has rejected a claim by South Korean sexual slavery victims and their relatives who sought compensation from the Japanese government over their sufferings during WWII. Activists denounced the decision. The same court in January called for Japan to give $89,000 each to a separate group of 12 former ‘comfort women’.
Syria Faten Ali Nahar, a 50-year-old Damascus resident, has applied to run for president, making her the first female to make a bid for Syria’s top job. The election is certain to be won by President Bashar al-Assad for a fourth seven-year term. The presidential polls, the second during the country’s 10-year-old civil war, will be held May 26.
