  • SK’s Battery Materials Unit Sees a Shortage for EV Component

    (Bloomberg) -- The battery materials unit of SK Innovation Co. said the global market for premium wet-type separators, a key component for electric vehicles, will run into a supply shortage in 2023 due to “explosive” growth.SK IE Technology Co. said in a statement Thursday that its sales of separators for EVs jumped 490% last year from 2018. The company -- part of South Korea’s third-largest conglomerate SK Group -- expects separators will account for about 80% of total sales in the next three years or more, from about 55% currently.“We’ve been keeping a close track of demand and supply and it looks like supply will fall short of meeting the rising demand from 2023,” Chief Executive Officer Rho Jae-sok told reporters at a briefing in Seoul.Separators improve the output and stability of lithium-ion batteries. Among peers that produce wet-type separators for EVs such as Japan’s Asahi Kasei Corp. and Toray Industries Inc., SK took the biggest market share last year with 26.5%, according to the statement, citing SNE Research Inc. It expects to more than double its annual separation capacity to 2.73 billion square meters in 2024 -- equivalent to supplying 1 million EVs per year.SK was a relative latecomer to the electric-car battery industry, embracing the technology only as part of a diversification push. SK Innovation began developing lithium-ion batteries for hybrid electric vehicles in 2005, and spun off SK IE Technology in April 2019. SK IE Technology plans to go public next month.While the near-term growth will remain in its separator business, the company said it plans to develop materials for solid-state batteries -- a new way of making batteries that experts think could take over from the current generation of lithium-ion cells -- and also expand its production of polyimide film that goes on flexible displays.“It’ll have to be after 2030 when the solid-state battery business gets commercialized, which means lithium-ion batteries will co-exist for some time,” Roh said. “Our parent SK Innovation is also looking into start-up firms with the relevant technologies to explore the areas we can take part in.”SK is not looking beyond China, Europe and the U.S. in expanding its production capacity for now, Roh said. He said the company won’t consider building a facility in America until after 2024, as demand there is currently small compared with China and Europe and the investment and operating costs are more expensive.The company said last month it’s investing 1.1 trillion won ($987 million) to build new factories in Poland to meet growing demand amid an EV boom in Europe.IPO PlansSK IE Technology seeks to raise as much as 2.3 trillion won in its initial public offering. If the stock is priced at the top of the range, it would give the company a market value of around 7.5 trillion won. The company will start trading on Kospi from May 11 after setting the IPO price on April 26. The sale of new shares will go into SK’s capital expenditure until 2023, as it will need between 700 billion and 800 billion won annually, Roh said.SK posted an operating profit of 125 billion won last year, up more than 55% from April-December in 2019 when the company was spun off, while sales rose 78% to 469.3 billion won during the same period. SK’s three-year compound annual growth rate is forecast at 38%, according to Horace Chan, a Bloomberg Intelligence analyst.Rho said SK Innovation’s $1.8 billion settlement earlier this month with LG Energy Solution, a unit of LG Chem Ltd., over trade secrets removed uncertainties and created an environment where the two companies can actively engage in talks about new product models and plans to gradually increase supply.     (Bloomberg) -- The United Arab Emirates went on its biggest Treasury-buying spree on record in February, purchasing more of the safe-haven securities than China in one of the worst months for U.S. debt markets in years.The Gulf nation, OPEC’s third-biggest crude producer, raised its stockpile by about $17 billion to $50.6 billion, making it the largest buyer after the U.K. that month, according to U.S. Treasury Department data. A spokesperson for the UAE central bank declined to make any immediate comment Wednesday.Though the UAE, whose capital Abu Dhabi accounts for almost 6% of the world’s oil reserves, may have built up enough of a buffer to commit more if its dollar earnings to the $21 trillion Treasuries market, it came as prices tumbled amid growing expectations of a global economic rebound. U.S. debt dropped 1.8% in February, according to a Bloomberg Barclays Index, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note climbing about 34 basis points, its sharpest increase since November 2016.“Other than the fact that rates were higher and that is the deepest and most liquid market, I wouldn’t know any other reason” why the government would boost purchases, said Abdul Kadir Hussain, the Dubai-based head of fixed-income asset management at Arqaam Capital.The move took UAE holdings to levels last seen in 2019 before the global pandemic and the crash in oil prices. China bought $9 billion of Treasuries in February to bring its total to $1.1 trillion, the highest since mid-2019. The country’s holdings are second only to Japan, which holds almost $1.3 trillion.Although a recovery in oil has been a boon across the energy-rich Middle East, the windfall may be even bigger for the UAE since it needs one of the lowest crude prices to balance its budget. Other top oil exporters in the Persian Gulf, including Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, cut back their Treasury holdings in February.The official tally may not accurately reflect the true size of a country’s holdings if they are held by banks in foreign countries.Like many of its regional peers, the UAE needs to have sufficient reserves to maintain confidence in its currency peg to the dollar. The central bank’s gross international reserves rose to almost 389 billion dirhams ($105.9 billion) in February, from 381.9 billion dirhams a month earlier.The International Monetary Fund estimates the UAE central bank’s reserves will reach $119 billion this year, in addition to more than $1 trillion in assets managed by the country’s wealth funds.Treasuries extended their declines in March, with the 10-year yield jumping a further 34 basis points to 1.74%.     Deliveroo’s shares slid to an all-time low after rival Uber Eats announced plans to expand its service to Germany in the coming weeks, ramping up competition among food delivery firms. While the news doesn’t have direct implications for London-listed Deliveroo, which withdrew from Germany in 2019, “it’s a reminder that there are deep-pocketed competitors in this industry,” Berenberg analyst Sarah Simon told Bloomberg. Uber’s senior vice president of delivery, Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty, told the Financial Times that Germany would be “strategically important”. Shares in Deliveroo, which have had a hard time mustering up gains since listing at the end of March, flopped 9.8p to 233p, extending declines to 40pc below its listing price. Joining the fallers was fellow food delivery service Just Eat Takeaway, which dropped 214p to £77.16, marking it down as one of the worst performers on the benchmark. Germany is one of its most lucrative markets. The wider market pared some of Tuesday’s declines, though the FTSE 100 failed to bounce back up above the 7,000 level as it rose 35.42 points to close at 6,895.29. The FTSE 250 shed 22.82 points 22,085.73. Tobacco giants British American Tobacco and Imperial Brands rebounded 44p to £27.36 and 32.5p to £14.98 respectively. It followed a slump on Tuesday for both stocks on the news that the Biden administration is considering tougher curbs on cigarettes. Healthcare, however, was an outperformer of the day. According to Michael Hewson, market analyst at CMC Markets, “a positive read across from US medical devices company Intuitive Surgical” sent medical equipment manufacturer Smith & Nephew to a more than two-month high and to the top of the FTSE 100. It added 52p to £14.66. Drug maker AstraZeneca advanced 126p to £76.20 after India’s Serum Institute said it would sell its vaccine to private hospitals at $8 (£5.70) per dose. Among others in the pharmaceuticals sector, Hikma Pharmaceuticals and GlaxoSmithKline were in the top 10 winners on the benchmark. Ladbrokes parent Entain rose 36p to a fresh all-time high of £16.63 after BetMGM – a US joint venture with the Las Vegas casino operator – said it was targeting net revenue of $1bn in 2022. It also said it expects the US sports betting market to be worth $32bn, more than previously expected. The US venture is the largest “iGaming” operator – online casinos and bingo – and the second-biggest sports betting firm behind FanDuel, which is owned by FTSE 100 rival Flutter Entertainment. Shares of Flutter rose 20p to £146.95. Meanwhile distribution and outsourcing firm Bunzl weighed on the top flight, down 80p to £24.24 despite saying it expects “robust” revenue growth for 2021. It reported a 1.4pc rise in underlying revenue for the first three months of the year.
