I'm not a mechanic but a good friend of mine has his own shop. Best mechanic I know.
He started tinkering with cars around age 14 or so. Then worked at an Audi dealership for years where he basically learned everything he knows. Then saved up enough money to open his own shop which is doing very well.
All I can say is lots of attention to detail
