West Bengal Election 2021 Voting Live Updates: In West Bengal, 43 constituencies will go to the polls on Thursday with 306 candidates in the fray in this phase. Over one crore voters in West Bengal will decide the political fate of the candidates. The polls are being held amid a raging pandemic where India has been seeing record spike in Covid-19 cases every day.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted ahead of polling saying, “The people of West Bengal are voting to elect a new assembly. On the sixth phase today, urging those whose seats are polling to exercise their franchise.”

After the violence in the first five polls, security measures have been heightened. Five people in Cooch Behar died in the fourth phase of polling on April 10. The poll panel has decided to deploy at least 1,071 companies of central forces in the sixth phase to ensure free and fair voting, he said. It will also put in place measures to ensure strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols during the voting process, the official said.

Over 1.03 crore voters will decide the political fate of 306 candidates in this phase. Of them, 53.21 lakh are men and 50.65 lakh women, while 256 are third gender. A staggering 1,071 companies of central forces have been deployed in this phase to ensure free and fair voting, officials said. Each company of central force has around 100 personnel and officers.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah appealed to all the voters of the sixth phase of Bengal, especially the youth, to vote fearlessly for the bright future of Bengal in "maximum numbers". " Your one vote is the cornerstone of giving rights to the poor and deprived of Bengal and making the state a leader in development," he tweeted in Hindi.

The highest deployment of the Commission- 278 companies will be in North 24 Parganas district followed by 181 companies in North Dinajpur district, 163 companies in Nadia district and 157 companies of central forces in East Burdwan district. Bongaon Police district in North 24 Parganas will have 69 companies while Barasat Police District will have 59 companies and Basirhat will have 40 companies. The Asansol Durgapur Commissionerate under East Burdwan district will have 14 companies of central forces.

Poll Preparations for Phase 6 of Bengal Polls | The Election Commission will deploy 779 companies of central forces for the sixth phase of the election with special emphasis in the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate area as it had witnessed sporadic violence during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. 107 companies' central forces will be deployed only for Barrackpore Commissionerate - much higher than the average deployment all through the other constituencies.

Bengal Polls Phase 6 | The Election Commission has tied up with Uber to provide free of cost ferrying to 80 plus and PWD voters to the polling booths to facilitate their voting in all the 17 Assembly constituencies in North 24 Parganas. The Election Commission has deployed 26 general observers, 13 expenditure observers and 13 police observers for the 5th phase of polls. There will be webcasting facilities in 7,466 polling booths and micro-observers will be deployed in 20 per cent of the booths.

A TMC vs BJP Analysis of LS Polls 2019 | If we analyse the 43 constituencies from the perspective of 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the Trinamool Congress had a lead in 24 of the constituencies while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had an edge in 19 seats. The total number of electors including service voters in these constituencies are 10,409,948 with 53,42,702 male electors and 50,66,990 female voters. The total number of polling booths are 14,480 that includes 10,897 main and 3,583 auxiliary booths. The number of 80 plus voters are 1,57,290 while 64,266 are PWD (Persons with Disabilities) voters. The total number of service electors are 22,157, third gender voters are 256 while overseas voters are only 15.

West Bengal on Tuesday registered its highest-single- day spike of 9,819 new COVID-19 cases, which took the tally to 6,78,172, and at least 46 more people succumbed to the infection, pushing the toll to 10,652. Both the TMC and the BJP have pitched hard to gain the confidence of Matuas, who make for a large chunk of the state’s Scheduled Caste population, in most of the 17 assembly segments going to polls in this phase in North 24 Parganas district and some of the nine seats in Nadia.
