History of World Earth Day
World Earth Day was first celebrated as Earth Day on 22 April 1970. It was started by US Senator Gaylord Nelson. But in 1969, after seeing the waste of the oil spill in the city Santa Barbara, California, he decided to observe this day for environmental protection.
On 22 April 1970, about 20 million American people participated in the first event of Earth Day with a goal to create a healthy environment. The first United States Environment Protection Agency was established on Earth Day, and legislation related to Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species (Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Animals) was approved. After that, Earth Day became popular in America and later on celebrations started all over the world.
World Earth Day History and Theme
Earlier, Earth Day was celebrated two days in a year (March 21 and April 22) all over the world. But since 1970 it is observed only on the 22 April. This date was decided by Gaylord Nelson, the then Wisconsin Senator so that everyone could participate in it. He liked the week of April (from date 19 to 25) for this, because these days do not have any spring holiday or festival.
On this day, many colleges and universities showcase various acts to make people aware of the hazards caused by pollution. Various activities are conducted all over the world by various organizations and communities including cleaning up litter from places like beaches, planting trees, and more to show that people do care about mother earth.
