Mysterious death of Sanaton : Bid to storm A-Block of RIMS foiled

Imphal, April 20 2021: Police used pepper spray to disperse students who tried to storm the Administrative Block of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Lamphel demanding justice for Sanaton Athokpam today.

Members and volunteers of student bodies including the All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF), Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Singpanglup (AIMS) and Justice For Sanaton Athokpam gathered at around 1.20 pm today and demanding a meeting with RIMS Director, tried to storm the Administrative Block.

However security personnel locked the office and blocked the protesters.

The agitating students then sat in front of the gate and raised several slogans demanding justice for Sanaton Athokpam.

They accused RIMS Director and authorities of not disclosing the facts of the case.

Later in the day, the student bodies, Meira Paibi Lups and the Justice For Sanaton held a press meet at Khurai Thangjam Leikai.

At the press meet, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba, Manipur president, L Memchoubi said the organisations condemn the excessive use of force by the police personnel against the students today at RIMS.

She also urged the Government to disclose the truth about the case and conduct the investigation speedily and effectively.

It may be recalled here that Sanaton Athokpam was a 5th Semester MBBS student at RIMS.

He was found reportedly hanging with both hands tied behind inside his room at a RIMS hotel on March 15.So far, police have not disclosed the cause of Sanaton's death and according to the Justice For Sanaton Athokpam, an FIR has not been filed yet in the case.

The Justice For Sanaton Athokpam has been demanding police to file an FIR and disclose the findings of the postmortem report.
