Cops raid flat for suspect, kin falls to death from balcony

Greater Noida: A 25-year-old “hardened criminal” died allegedly after falling from the third floor of his flat during a police raid in search of his brother-in-law, an accused in an attempt to murder case. However, the family of the deceased has accused the cops of pushing him to death.
Chand, the deceased, had 14 cases registered against him and was a co-accused in a murder case of a sub-inspector, Akhtar Khan, who was allegedly shot dead when police attempted to nab criminals on the run in April 2016. Chand was out on bail.
Around 1.15pm on Sunday, around seven policemen, including two female cops from the Beta II police station, entered the HIG flats society in Omicron I Sector in a green Innova and a white Scorpio, in which Chand’s brother Lukmaan was allegedly seated.
Chand’s relatives alleged that police had picked up Lukmaan first from outside the society on Sunday and made him sit on the back seat of the Innova which entered the society followed by the Scorpio. Lukmaan also alleged he was beaten up by cops and questioned about the whereabouts of his brother-in-law Imran.
Aas Mohammed, Chand’s maternal uncle, said that Lukmaan was brought to the society by the police without making any entry in the society’s register. “When the cops reached Chand’s rented flat, they beat him up and pushed him out of the window of the bathroom to show that he had jumped out in a bid to escape. He was tortured before being pushed outside,” he said.
Cops claimed that Chand was trying to escape from the washroom using a pipe and because of his weight, the window broke and he came down with it in an escape bid. “Chand suffered serious injuries on his head, face, chest and thigh due to the assault. The cops took him to Yatharth hospital, Greater Noida,” said Mohammed.
The police vehicles entering the HIG flats society in Omicron I on Sunday afternoon have been captured on CCTV, TOI has learnt.
DCP (Greater Noida) Rajesh Kumar Singh said, “He was a criminal with 14 cases lodged him, including the murder of sub-inspector Akhtar Khan. The Beta II cops had gone to his flat after a tipoff that his brother-in-law Imran would be present. Imran also has several cases against him in Aligarh and GB Nagar.”
Additional DCP (Greater Noida) Vishal Pandey said that the deceased was a hardened criminal and hence, no FIR would be lodged in the case.
