MANGALURU: Janaki and Naveen, medical students from Kerala’s Thrissur Medical College, who were targetted through a hate campaign for their Rasputin dance which went viral on the internet, are getting support from in this coastal city.
Dancing to the tunes of 1978 BoneyM classic Rasputin, medical students Janaki M Omkumar and Naveen K Razak, took the internet by storm. This also triggered a hate campaign by saffron groups based on the religion of the two students. Following this, the student fraternity in Kerala hit back at communal hate mongers, by taking up the ‘Rasputin Challenge’ and uploading the video of dancing to the BoneyM song on social media.
MBBS students of KS Hegde Medical Academy here also accepted the challenge, and danced to the tunes of Rasputin in blue scrubs, in front of the college in Deralakatte. The video with the hashtags #stepagainsthatred #rasputin #rasputinchallenge #rasputindance #medicosdance #instareels #goingwiththetrend, have also gone viral.
Medical students Esha Paul, Aswathy Raphel Vadakken, Ardra Sibi, Greeta George Kaitharan, Vishnupriya C, Veena Madhavan, Aiswarya Menon, Akhila Roy, Jyothi Iyer and Prathvi S performed to the tune of the Rasputin song, while it was shot by Athil Umer Kari. The group has created a fusion of Bharatanatyam and Western hip hop, in sync with the Rasputin tune, in the 30 second video.
Ardra Sibi, one of the group members, told TOI the performance was just fun and entertainment, created as a stress-buster during their busy academic schedules.
“We are all students in the second and fourth year batches of MBBS. We saw the original video made by the students of Thrissur Medical College. We have a dance group in our college, and we thought of doing something between our busy schedules. Few in the group are Bharatanatyam dancers, and others are enthusiastic about Western hip hop style dance. We all got together and danced, so that we can relax in between our busy schedule,” she said.
