‌The late poet Shankha Ghosh, the boundless emptiness in the poetic land of Bengal

Sankh Ghosh had been suffering from various problems due to old age for several months. In Corona’s days, treatment was at home. Corona was tested on April 11 for a slight fever. The report is positive. But the treatment was going on leaving him at home. His physical condition has been deteriorating since Tuesday night. Although given a ventilator on Wednesday morning, all attempts failed. The doctors opened the ventilator. Note that Shankhababu’s wife Pratimadevi is also affected by Corona. He is undergoing treatment at home.

The death of a great soul like Shankha Ghosh will remind the Bengalis again and again – not all deaths are equal. The Citizenship Act, amended since the stormy days of the seventies, no ruler has ever been able to buy his voice. His pen was always awake.

Shankha Ghosh, son of Manindra Kumar Ghosh and Amla Ghosh, was born on 5 February 1932. He graduated from Presidency College, Pabna in 1951 with a degree in Bengali. Post graduate from Calcutta University. He has successfully taught for four decades.

In 1986, he received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his book of Prayer Poetry. He got the Sahitya Akademi in 1999 by translating the play Raktakalyan. In 2011, the Center honored Shankha Ghosh with Padma Bhushan.
