Kaizer Chiefs remain on course for their worst-ever finish in the PSL era after suffering a 2-1 defeat at home to an impressive Cape Town City side at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday.
Despite a late attempt at a fightback, the defeat leaves Gavin Hunt's men languishing in 11th in the league standings, on track to finish lower than their worst ever finish of 9th position.
Cape Town City took a deserved lead in the 21st minute as striker Tashreeq Morris beat the Chiefs defence at the near post to finish past a sprawling Itumeleng Khune.
City nearly doubled their lead in the 27th minute as Fagrie Lakay directed an effort towards goal that Khune managed to get just enough on to keep it out as he stopped the ball before crossing the goal-line at the second attempt.
At the 30th minute mark, Kaizer Chiefs were enjoying the bulk of possession with 52% of the ball and three attempts on target to the two of CT City.
The Citizens had started the first-half the better of the two sides and that's how they finished the first period too as they went into the break holding the advantage.
Hunt looked to turn things around by making a change during the break as Kearyn Baccus replaced young attacker Nkosingiphile Ngcobo.
The change failed to inspire a turnaround as CT City doubled their lead in the 51st minute thanks to a deflected Surprise Ralani effort that beat a stranded Khune.
On the hour mark, Chiefs looked well out of the contest with the away side looking comfortable to see out an impressive win on the road.
Substitute Baccus pulled one back for Chiefs with a powerful header in the 66th minute after an inch-perfect cross from Siyabong Ngezana to pull the home side right back into the contest.
Ngezana had a golden opportunity in the 83rd minute to go from provider to scorer when he put a close-range effort into the side-netting.
Chiefs started to pile on the pressure in search for an equaliser in the final five minutes of the match with wave after wave of attack as the City defence were pushed back.
Despite the late attempt at a fightback by the home side, the match finished with the Citizens running out as deserved winners as Jan Olde Riekerink's side consolidated their spot in the top eight.
