BS VI standards demand a drastic reduction in emissions and the technology needed to achieve this varies between petrol and diesel engines as their emissions profiles are different.

The implementation of BS VI has been a frantic race against time and every automaker has been forced to prioritise which engines should be upgraded and which shouldn’t. The bigger challenge, however, is one of cost, especially for diesel engines, which need very expensive hardware to cut emissions down to BS VI levels.

BS VI emission norms are so tight that extremely precise fueling is vital. That's why most OEMs have ditched simple, affordable carburettors mainstream manufacturers ditching the affordable and simple carburettors in their products, for more accurate, but expensive fuel-injection systems.

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been a year since India leapfrogged to the stringent BS VI emission regime. This is an ideal time to pause, look back on the year that went by and discuss future emission norms (RDE, CAFE, BSVII, fuel types) and the technologies / powertrains and strategies needed to comply with them.

It’s also an opportune time to bring together the entire value-chain of the industry to exchange thoughts and ideas that will help the Indian automotive industry to be cleaner and greener. With these objectives, we at Autocar Professional will be hosting a two-day virtual conference titled ‘Meeting Emission Challenges’, on April 28 and April 29 from 9:45 am to 2.00 pm.
